Tips for Telling Spooky Ghost Stories at a Kids Camping Weekend

In 2017, it was revealed that 13 million American families intended to camp more than they did in 2016, according to the 2017 North American Camping Report. Camping can be a great activity to do with the kids and there are plenty of things to keep everyone entertained to take part in.

One great idea, depending on the age of your children, is to tell spooky ghost stories while you are camping. There are some great ideas to help you set the scene and create a spooky atmosphere that is suitable for the whole family.

How does one distinguish reality from fiction?  The answer is simple....experience.  What tends to be fiction to some is reality to others based on their experience alone.  It is awful hard to convince someone that they didn't see something that they know they saw with their own two eyes.

Evidence is another key factor in a reality check.  If it is present, the only ones denying the facts are the ones that do not wish to believe them.

Here in Kentucky and even many other southern states, we get told that there is no cougars in this area. But yet, we keep seeing them and sometimes even black panthers. But according to wildlife officials we do not have any cougars in the area and we are misidentifying other animals. It reminds me of a few years ago, when these same wildlife officials told us we didn't have any black bears in this area but of course we have a growing number of them.

Well, I got the following report of a cougar sighting in the state of Georgia and wanted to share it.

- Start Report -

Name: Ken ******

Email Address: On file

State: Georgia

County:

Date of Sighting: October 99

Time of Day: 7 PM

Nearest Town: Wrightsville

Length of Sighting: 20 seconds

How many Witnesses: 1

Any Photos/Videos: no

Describe sighting in detail:
Sitting in a tree stand deer hunting a pine grove, when at dusk a cougar walks right under my stand. It was on the trail I have to take back to the truck.  I live in the west and know a cougar when I see one.  Not a black panther but a tan cougar.

- End Report -

I wonder why wildlife officials tell us that there is no cougars in an area, when in fact there is. Is it because they don't really know? or is it because they just don't want the general public to know they are there? To me, if the officials know they are there and are lying to people, it would be more dangerous to hikers and campers.  I think it would be better to let people know the possibly dangerous cat was in the area, so the hikers and campers could take precautions in case they ran into one. If an accident happened and the wildlife officials had lied about cougars being in an area, would that make the libel in some way?

Thanks to Ken for sending in his report.

Be safe everyone.

Thanks
~Tom~

Exists
Rated: R
Running time: 81 minutes

Exists is a Bigfoot movie directed by Eduardo Sanchez. Some of you may remember Sanchez from the film The Blair Witch Project. I was not a big fan of The Blair Witch Project but do appreciate it for the marketing strategy. I ran a video store at the time Blair Witch came out and the marketing used portrayed the film as being real and it really hooked people.

Sanchez also directed one of my favorite movies, Altered. Altered was a rednecks find an alien film that was just fantastic in my eyes. I may do an in depth review of it as some point, but for now lets get back to the new film.

With Exists the filming is very similar to Sanchez's earlier work in The Blair Witch Project. There are a lot of hand held video shots, shaky camera scenes and heavy use of GoPro cameras. But, the camera work is very effective in this film. Don't let the idea of the the shaky hand held shots put you off, this movie is filmed very well and this type of filming is a corner stone for Sanchez.

The plotline in Exists is pretty straight forward. A camping trip to an uncles cabin becomes a nightmare of terror from an unknown creature in the woods. Of course, this creature is none other than our beloved Bigfoot.

Some may be put off at the idea of a Bigfoot being a murderous monster, but there is a revenge element to the film. I will not get into this, as it would contain some spoilers and I don't want to ruin it for anyone.

The Bigfoot suit used in this film is top notch and may be one of the best in recent memory. There are a few scenes where I can see some clever trickster ripping it from the film and posting it to youtube as a personal sighting, so beware.

The film does an excellent job of building terror and suspense. There are a few "jumpy" parts that might make your heart skip a beat. That's always fun.

One thing, of the few, that I didn't like about the film was the Bigfoot howls. I don't think they represented the recordings I have heard or what others have described. But this is just a minor issue and most people will not even notice or think about it.  There is also some rock throwing that was pretty good and it made me think of the numerous reports and accounts I have heard and read about that included this Bigfoot behavior.

So in closing, I can recommend the film for anyone who has an interest in Bigfoot or just likes a good scary movie. Hats off to Sanchez for doing a fine job and beating my expectations. Also the DVD version I purchased has some great extra content, like deleted scenes and stuff, that I recommend you also watch.

Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Surrounded By Owls In The Woods?
A Frightening Bigfoot Encounter In Ohio
By TCC Team Member Dorraine Fisher

Barnesville, Ohio

There are strange moments in the woods when you just know things aren’t what they seem. And Mark Hudak’s hunting trip on private land in Ohio was just such a moment.
Hudak, of Clinton, Ohio, jumped at the chance to do some hunting on a nice 2000-acre plot of private land near Barnesville, Ohio. But he and his friends got more than they bargained for that night.
"It started out that we heard some owls hooting at us. Well, that is normal, so we didn't think nothing of it," Hudak explained. But then it got stranger.
As the men continued their trek through the woods, they realized the owl sounds were numerous and coming at them from both sides. The noticed also that the sounds were getting closer as they walked, and they stopped every time the men stopped walking.
As they continued moving down a ridge, they heard an animal scream at them.
"We finally noticed that something else was not right. Not a single other animal was making noise anymore. No nighttime sounds. Now if you're a hunter, you'll know how weird that it," said Hudak.
And in the silence of the night he and his friends noticed the distinct sounds of footsteps all around them, and they knew they weren’t dealing with owls. They knew they were being followed by something.
"I would almost compare them to a Navy Seal team the way they flanked us," Hudak explained.
The group, now too afraid to try and run back to their vehicle or to get any hunting done,  waited out the long night in the woods. They claimed that the normal sounds of the woods didn’t return until nearly 11:00 AM the next morning.

Though they never saw anything, Hudak was convinced that he and his partners most certainly had an encounter with Bigfoot.  Hudak had been interested in the subject of Bigfoot since he was a child And he’s been searching for them ever since this encounter with the help of the Southeastern Ohio Society For Bigfoot Investigation (SOSBI). *******DF

Who's watching your Tent?

Who’s Afraid To Go Camping Now?
By TCC Team Member Dorraine Fisher

Should you be afraid of Bigfoot in the woods?
Maybe you’ve seen or heard something out there that changed your world view forever. Or maybe you’ve just seen all the evidence and you’ve decided it makes more sense to believe. But should you be afraid to go back out there?
When the cast of Finding Bigfoot was asked about their extreme animal phobias, Cliff Barackman said, “I’d have to say the entire class of arachnids, whether it be spiders, scorpions, or ticks.”
Not exactly what we’d expect from the guy who’s been shown out in the thick of Sasquatch country in the dark of night with little more than a sleeping bag and a flashlight, lying on the ground waiting for the big hairy ones to give him a nudge.  But we can all relate to his fear nonetheless.  No one wants spiders in their sleeping bag.
Matt Moneymaker confessed his well-warranted fear of mountain lions, while Bobo expressed a fear of polar bears. Ranae Holland didn’t take part in the interview but we’re pretty sure she’s not afraid of anything.
Not one of these famous bigfoot trackers expressed any fear whatsoever of the apes in the woods of North America. Even though many who’ve encountered the elusive “wood ape” in the flesh confess they’re very leery of returning to the same spot ever again.
And it’s not even necessary to see the creatures to be affected. Grunts and growls and having rocks thrown at you from a seemingly invisible creature in the woods can have a lasting impact on the human psyche. Our fear is built into our brains for a reason. There are some things out there we SHOULD be afraid of.
But it’s possible that our fears of sasquatches may not be necessary at all. It’s very possible that our elusive “friends” in the woods only use scare tactics to do just that: scare us half to death, and then make sure we think twice before coming back to that spot. And maybe they’ve learned over thousands of years of evolution that we humans scare pretty easily.
There have been very few reports in North America in modern times of a sasquatch attacking, killing, kidnapping, or otherwise assaulting any human. Even though there have been multiple accounts of property destruction, livestock assault and murder, and an occasional cabin invasion that might serve to scare the bejesus out of us, there seems to be little to no actual physical contact between them and us.
And you might think that’s only because they’re a rare animal.  But I’m more inclined to think it’s because they’re a very shy animal that has survived all this time by avoiding us. Attacking a human would surely bring attention to them and the area in which they live. And it’s quite possible they’ve learned to only do that when their home or young are threatened.
So should you be afraid to go camping? The evidence says no. But as always when we place
ourselves in the home of other wildlife we should always be wary and respectful of their territory. And
if something grunts and throws big rocks at your tent in the middle of the night, I’d move to different
spot. ********

The American black bear is the most common and widely distributed bear in North America. (Photo by Alan Bauer.)
The American black bear and how it may relate to sasquatch
by
Waylen Frederick & Thomas Marcum

The American black bear is a large warm blooded mammal that inhabits the forested areas of North America including 32 states, northern Mexico, and Canada. It is found in almost all the same areas where there has been reports of bigfoot.
Adult male black bears can weigh around 350 pounds while females can weigh around 200 pounds. There are some reports of black bears weighing 800 pounds or more and some standing 6 feet to 10 feet tall when standing or walking upright. The life span of an American black bear is normally around 30 years or more in the wild.
Black bears are excellent climbers and in the south may actually den in large trees. Black bears can run in excess of 35 mph for short distances, they have good eyesight and they see in full color, they have great hearing, and an exceptional sense of smell, they are great problem solvers, and are very adept at avoiding human contact.

Black bears are omnivorous which means they eat both meat and plant matter and will eat insects as well, they are opportunistic and will take advantage of any easy meal. There primary diet in the spring time consist of herbs and forbes primarily, but they will eat some small animals as well.
Summer time diet includes soft mast such fruits which include black berries, muscadines, and mushrooms, polk berries and hack berries.

In the fall diet switches to hardwood mast such as acorns, walnuts, hickory nuts, and pecans as well as small animals and roots. Black bears will also search in trash cans looking for a easy snack.
There has been many reports of bears and bigfoot searching through dumpsters and trash cans looking for a meal, as well.
[muscadines - are a grapevine species native to the present-day southeastern United States]
[hardwood mast - referrers to the nut crops]

That old cheeseburger can become a meal for a black bear
Most black bears hibernate in the winter with the exception of the Louisiana black bear which semi hibernates or may not hibernate at all. Some of this deep sleep or lack of it, may be linked to weather conditions and temperatures.

Black bear populations range around 150,000 in the pacific north west, 200,000 in Alaska, 80,000 in the north, 65,000 in the north east, 20,000 in the south.
So if an area can sustain a large population of black bears, then it is feasible that a small population of sasquatch could also call it home. It would also be safe to assume that black bears and bigfoot would eat many of the same types of food and possibly do the same type of activities. One would think that if a black bear is smart enough to find a shallow stream with fish in it and proceed to catch and eat fish, that a bigfoot, which is thought to be more intelligent that bears, could also do the same thing.

So if you're looking for bigfoot, you might want to know the bear population of the area before heading out.

Bear Tips
Do's and Don'ts in Bear Country
To avoid encounters with black bears while hiking or camping:

*Keep a clean camp. Put garbage in wildlife-resistant trash containers.
*Store food in double plastic bags and, when possible, place the bags in your vehicle's trunk or in wildlife-resistant food lockers. Double-wrapped food may also be placed in a backpack or other container and hang it from a tree branch at least 10 feet above the ground and 4 feet out from the tree trunk. Never store food in your tent.
*When camping, sleep at least 50 to 100 yards from your cooking area and food storage site.
* Hike in small groups and make your presence known by singing or talking.
*Keep small children close and on trails.

If you come in close contact with a bear:

*Stay calm and avoid direct eye contact, which could elicit a charge. Try to stay upwind and identify yourself as a human by standing up, talking and waving your hands above your head.
*Do not approach the bear, particularly if cubs are present. Give the bear plenty of room.
*If you cannot safely move away from the bear, and the animal does not flee, try to scare it away by clapping your hands or yelling.
*If the bear attacks, fight back aggressively. As a last resort, should the attack continue, protect yourself by curling into a ball or lying on the ground on your stomach and playing dead.

The Original Marble mountain video. The Filmer Jim Mills passed away in 2010. As for the footage the "thing" in the video seems to have very long arms. I hear the BFRO messures the tree branch at over 8 foot tall. meaning the creature was over 8 ft tall. Pretty interesting video and notice how the "nest" looks like the one from the Utah video.
