Modern Pterodactyl Sightings
In recent years, there have been numerous reports of sightings of creatures that resemble pterodactyls, the prehistoric flying reptiles that are believed to have gone extinct millions of years ago. These sightings span across various locations worldwide, from the tropical islands of Hawaii to the urban landscapes of North Carolina. While these accounts are intriguing, it makes me wonder if these sightings are misidentification of some known animal.
Sightings Around the World
Hawaii
One of the most recent reports comes from the East Hawaii Big Island side. The witness described seeing a large, featherless creature soaring through the sky. The creature reportedly had a long beak and a wingspan that was much larger than any bird native to the area.
Here are some more reports from Hawaii.
Here is a video that features four eyewitness testimonies where they tell about their sightings. One of the eyewitnesses estimated the size of the flying creature to be that of a small airplane; another person estimated the wingspan to be 30 feet.
Here is the video
But that is not all, there were more reported sightings in Maui, Hawaii that you can watch by clicking Here.
There is also another report from 2012 mentions a twelve-year-old boy stepping out into his front yard in the Maunawili Valley, northeast of Honolulu, and seeing a gliding “pterodactyl” about 100 feet high
Canada
In Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, a sighting was reported during a summer night. The witness described the creature as having a wingspan of at least 20 feet and a long tail with a diamond-shaped tip. The creature was reportedly seen flying against the wind, suggesting it was not simply a large bird caught in a gust.
A woman in Nova Scotia reported seeing an animal “three times the size of an eagle,” with a long, forked tail, which she believed to be a pterodactyl. This led to the documentation of pterodactyl sightings across Nova Scotia and eastern Canada.
Sightings have also been reported in New Brunswick and Ontario.
An eyewitness reported seeing an apparent living pterosaur flying over a neighborhood north of Toronto.
Illinois
In Heyworth, Illinois, a sighting was reported in the summer of 1977. The witness described seeing a featherless flying "reptile" with a wingspan of about 10 feet. The creature was reportedly seen flying low and slow over a cornfield.
In 2019, a pterosaur was reported in Wheaton, a suburban city on the western edge of the greater Chicago metropolitan area.
There’s also a video of an alleged pterodactyl perched on a Chicago high rise that can be found by clicking here. The bird, if it is a bird and not a window-washing crane in the video, does appear to be rather large but is it a Pterodactyl?
Interestingly, French explorers navigating the middle Mississippi River in 1673 reported seeing 40-50 ft. pterodactyl petroglyphs in a cliff wall in modern-day Alton, Illinois.
California
At Lake Isabella in California, a large flying creature was reported in April 2020. The witness described the creature as having a wingspan of at least 15 feet and a long tail with a diamond-shaped tip. The creature was reportedly seen flying over the lake before disappearing into the nearby mountains.
There have been many sightings of apparent living pterosaurs in Los Angeles County, even a few of them from the city of Los Angeles. In general, those sightings are over or near storm channels or at least not very far from one of those channels.
Two sightings have been reported from the same backyard in the city of Lakewood, California.
There is also a video that briefly covers seven encounters with some of the largest flying creatures reported in California. Check it out by Clicking Here.
North Carolina
In North Carolina, there's been a growing belief of modern pterosaurs living in the area. A woman named Cynthia Lee, who has been studying to become a veterinary technician reported seeing an apparent pterosaur in Raleigh. She described the creature as having a wingspan of about 10 feet and a long tail with a diamond-shaped tip. She was sure that the flying creature had no feathers, but it did have a long tail with a “diamond-shaped bulb at the end of the tail.” It also had a head crest.
In Asheville, N.C., a lady saw a “huge” black-winged creature fly very low over her car. It had no feathers but “sharp edges” to its features.
In Jacksonville, N.C., an eyewitness saw something “huge” flying in the sky: “It looked like a pale greenish white and smooth-skinned.
There have been sightings of pterosaurs in 33 states and Washington, D.C., including Raleigh and Durham.
A video titled “Pterodactyls ALIVE in North Carolina!” features eleven sighting reports of flying dinosaurs (Ropen), in North Carolina, including Raleigh, Durham, Conover, Wilmington, Guilford County, and Kernersville.
Conclusion
Keep watching the skies!
