Wendigo 1978

Cannibalism and Bigfoot?
The Legend Of The Wendigo

By TCC Team Member Dorraine Fisher
Professional Writer, a nature and wildlife enthusiast who has written for many magazines.

When Algernon Blackwood wrote his classic horror tale "The Wendigo," about men tracking down a cannibalistic "wood spirit" roaming the forests of northern Minnesota, did he actually have Bigfoot in mind?

The creature in the story hardly fits the profile of a sasquatch as we know them. The Wendigo, or translated from Inuit language, "the evil that devours mankind," is the more the stuff of grade B horror movies. It was said to feast on human flesh and was believed to be responsible for many missing woodland hikers reported over the years. And a German explorer in the Great Lakes region in the 1860’s eventually translated the name to mean "cannibal."

Great Lakes Native American tribes described the creature as a kind of spirit being that reached up to 15 feet tall, with red, glowing eyes, yellow skin, matted hair, and huge fangs for devouring their victims. And it’s said that these creatures used to be human, but were, by way of some kind of magic, changed into these horrific monsters. According to Algonquin legend, whenever a human turned to cannibalism to survive in the harsh conditions of the wilds in the Great Lakes region, the Wendigo sprang to life.

So many of these kinds of these types stories around the world are believed to have been created as a warning of what would happen if we misbehave. Parents have "created" monsters for centuries to keep children out of trouble. The bogie man will get you if you leave your bed. The lake monster will get you if you go near the water. All these are designed to keep children from getting hurt, and to keep parents from worrying.

But is the Wendigo an adult version of this scenario, applied to keep people from the most unspeakable human atrocity? Or was it just a menacing Great Lakes version of Bigfoot.

True or not, the white settlers in those areas believed the legends well enough. They considered the Wendigo to be an omen of death. There were a number of sightings near Rosesu, in Northern Minnesota in the 1800’s, and after each sighting, an unexpected death was said to have occurred.

But probably the most interesting detail about these "spirit beings" is their connection to a supposed mental disorder known as Wendigo psychosis. This disorder is characterized by an unnatural desire to feast on human flesh even though normal food might be readily available. But it’s not clear whether this disorder is real or not.

There are a few stories about this including one that took place in the late 1800’s where a Plains Cree trapper’s son died and he experienced a kind of insanity in his grieving in which he killed the rest of his family members and cannibalized them. All this while he could have easily secured food from a local outpost close by. But it seems none of the stories can be substantiated and Wendigo psychosis is still somewhat of a mystery.

Often we can’t be completely sure that these legends of monsters don’t spring from Bigfoot sightings. But with so many Native American legends having been found to be at least a little bit true, we have to give the possibility a second thought. ********DF

What would proof of Bigfoot mean to you?

Bigfoot Proof
The Real Reason It’s So Important?

By TCC Team Member Dorraine Fisher
Professional Writer, a nature and wildlife enthusiast who has written for many magazines.

While we’re waiting for science to do it’s thing and process DNA evidence to prove without a shadow of a doubt that other intelligent human-like creatures actually do walk the earth, the debate about their existence will still rage on. Whether you believe or not, it’s a fact in this community that we all reluctantly accept.

But why have we all become so obsessed? Is it the need to be right? Maybe, but I don’t think that’s the whole reason. Is it the need for vindication? In part, but that’s not all of it either. Is it money? Yes, that too, a little, but not necessarily. Not when so many of us do this work for very little or nothing.

There’s a little element of obsession that takes over when you’ve seen, heard, or otherwise experienced something that hasn’t been proven to exist. You know what you saw, but may not always matter. There may still a part of you that has to ask the question, "Did I really? Or did I just imagine it?"

But for those of us who’ve never actually had a sighting or been forced to struggle through the act of processing that, it’s more like just satisfying an intellectual curiosity. Or maybe it’s just fun to think about.

But for those who struggle every day to process what they saw, it becomes more of an obsession; a motivation that drives you want to know more and to understand. The real, solid proof becomes more important because maybe you DO need to vindicate yourself to some degree. That would feel good, wouldn’t it? This must surely be the case with habituators. Seeing these creatures on a regular basis when other don’t have that experience could be frustrating, and vindication might be the sweetest thing ever.

But it’s different for those who’ve just had a random sighting, face to face with legend in a split second in infinity. They are the uniquely tortured individuals in this quest. And they’re the ones I’m focused on here and now.

There’s always that miniscule, remote possibility that you didn’t see what you thought you saw. But there’s just as good a chance that you did. And when the proof finally does come, it certainly won’t end the arguments because there’s so much left to explore and learn. But maybe it will help you JUST enough. Maybe you’ll see that it’s not entirely necessary to know what you saw was real. Maybe it’s even simpler than that. If the real proof is finally already there to support what you believe, maybe that will help you relax and put it into perspective. No more stressing over possibilities. No more wondering. What you saw very well COULD have been real, and maybe that’s all you’ll need to know. We can only hope. *******DF

Coyote track
A few days ago we were contacted by Tracy about a strange scream her son-in-law recorded one evening in New Hampshire. You can view the original post with the audio clip by Clicking Here.

Our very own Jason Morse got in contact with Tracy and her son-in-law Chris and set up a day to go out to the area and look for evidence.

Jason: "Didn't see any bigfoot tracks or anything, but there's so much land out there, we didn't even scratch the surface. Plenty of game, deer, coyote turkey, porcupine, and beaver tracks and evidence all over. Best part was the power lines right behind his house, and a small river, so it was a perfect place."

Chris and his wife said this was the first time they had heard anything but went on to say, "A while back, we came home late one night, and as we walked from the car to the house, we had "something huge" run across the yard and crash through the trees."

It is worth noting that Chris has a possible military background and is very knowledgeable and his wife is a nurse, so very respectable people.
Chris plans on setting up some game cams and doing some research himself. We will continue to work with Chris and investigate the report.

Jason said: "I think it was genuine" referring to the report.

[Special Thanks:Jason Morse for his work and investigation on this case, Erin Morse for her help]

A Race Of Giants?
Missionary E. Walker’s Letter...About Bigfoot?
Goliath from the Bible
By TCC Team Member Dorraine Fisher
Professional Writer, a nature and wildlife enthusiast who has written for many magazines.

It’s always interesting to me to look at old accounts of ape-like creatures from North American history. And it’s especially interesting to see how the descriptions of the creatures parallel what researchers report about them today. The similarities are sometimes astounding.

Case in point, Reverend E. (Elkanah) Walker, missionary to the Spokane Indians in 1840. In his historic letter to Reverend David Green with the office of the Secretary of the American Board of Commissions for Foreign Missions, he explains some interesting stories he’s heard from these Indians. Early accounts of a strong smell, whistling, rocks being thrown at houses, and cases of kidnapping humans that resemble the Albert Ostman account. The following is the ending passage from that letter:

… "I suppose you will bear with me if I trouble you with a little of their superstition, which has recently come to my knowledge. They believe in the existence of a race of giants which inhabit a certain mountain off to the west of us. This mountain is covered with perpetual snow. They inhabit its top. They may be classed with Goldsmith’s nocturnal class and they cannot see in the daytime. They hunt and do all of their work in the night. They are men [s ]tealers. They come to the people’s lodges in the night when the people are asleep and take them, and put them under their skins and take them to their place of abode without even waking. When they wake in the morning they are wholly lost, not knowing in what direction their home is. The account that they give of these Giants will in some measure correspond with the Bible account of this race of beings. They say their track is about a foot and a half long. They will carry two or three beams upon their back at once. They frequently come in the night and steal their salmon from their nets and eat the’m raw. If the people are awake they always know when they are coming very near, by their strong smell, which is most intolerable. It is not uncommon for them to come in the night and give three whistles and then the stones will begin to hit their houses. The people believe that they are still troubled with their nocturnal visits."

We can only imagine what Reverend Green must have been thinking as he read this.

The letter was taken from the Holland Library of Washington University and the letter in its entirety can be seen here:  HERE

Audio recording of Bigfoot Screams

New Audio Recording of Possible Bigfoot Screams

This is yet another report of possible bigfoot activity in New Hampshire. As some of you may know we have been getting a lot of reports of a large bigfoot-type creature in and around the Newmarket area. In this same area, Camp Lee Rd., there was a sightings report sent to us in Dec. Read that report by Clicking HERE. The audio clip below was recorded after the late Dec. sighting report, so we now have more evidence of a possible bigfoot in the area. Also, these screams were recorded by different people than the ones who filed the report in late Dec. This could possibly be a fox but it seems rather loud for a fox.

St. Joe's River
I received another sightings report, well actually it is two different sightings, these took place years ago but it is still important to get them recorded.

Here is the report sent to me by JT

JT's 1981 sighting -
"I was hunting in Idaho with father when I was 16, I was on a mountain side near St. Joe's river,
I had a mule deer in my sights and as I fired the deer fell, and I saw the creature by a thicket of trees.
It was large, hairy and had long arms. It made a loud yell, it was mad I think. Our outfitters said it was a  bear 8 foot standing as a man, bull crap I know what I saw. It was 300 yards away and I could of shot it but I froze up."

JT's Sighting in 1972
"When I was 7 in Maryland, we called them swamp apes, I was on the beach below the house and
it came out of marsh. It was smaller, 6 foot and had a baby in arms, it ran away fast and it yelled and broke a tree. As it ran off  I was crying and got my dad, he was hard on me and said it was a bear. People say I'm a nut, oh well I saw what I saw yes they are real. I think they travel under ground in sulfur mines, at times it smelled of sulfur.  That's it but my brother in law had 1 jump on his car not
far from here many reports 30 mins away. Once you see 1 you never forget it. "

We would like to thank JT for sharing his sightings with all of us, So Thanks JT.

Thanks
Tom

Really? is that Factual?

Bigfoot And "Factual Reality"
Why Bigfoot Might Be Real But Factual Reality Isn’t

By TCC Team Member Dorraine Fisher
Professional Writer, a nature and wildlife enthusiast who has written for many magazines.

A favorite new phrase has surfaced in the world of Bigfoot skeptics when they present their arguments against the case for the existence of the creature. "Factual reality" is supposed to end all debate and bring reason and logic to the conversation. But the trouble is, given the nature of science, factual reality itself can’t possibly exist.

What is reality after all? Physicists are attempting to answer this question as we speak, while, at the same time, only creating more questions as they learn. But with the knowledge that’s available, it’s becoming clearer that reality isn’t what we think it is. Well, actually it is...but it isn’t.

But the one thing that is clear is that reality cannot be determined by one person or one group of people. Reality is quite a personal thing, unique to each individual human, and created by that person’s personal perceptions. Are you confused yet?

Imagine that two different people from two different walks of life board a plane. The plane crashes and one of those people is killed while the other survives. For the family of the person who is killed, the event is a tragedy. While for the family of the survivor, it was a miracle. The two families, having had different experiences of the event will perceive the event two different ways. Two different perceptions, two completely different realities. Therefore, there is NO absolute reality that everyone should be able to recognize because they have not had the same experiences.

Law enforcement is now forced to decide if eye witness testimony is dependable. If there were three eye witnesses to a particular event, when asked to describe it, each will give a slightly different story. A positive person will try to see the bright side. A negative person will perceive it as negative. And a dramatic person will see it as a terrible tragedy or miraculous event, nothing short of a miracle. Three people, three completely different lives, three different sets of perceptions describing the same event, three different ways. So who’s right?

Our personal perceptions decide. If we’re basically a positive person, we’ll believe the positive witness. If we’re a bit on the negative side, we’ll buy into the gloom and doom sided witness. And you get the picture. So who IS right? Well, nobody....and everybody. Depending on their perceptions.

One person cannot possibly understand another’s point of view, albeit reality, unless they’ve lived exactly the same life, had exactly the same experiences, and done exactly the same things. But many will argue their point because their reality tells them one thing. But they’re arguing with someone that has different perceptions and can’t possibly see that same reality. The can only see their own. How could they understand anything else?

So the term "factual reality" is an oxymoron.

And, now, what is a fact?

According to the Oxford dictionary a fact is "a thing that is known or proved to be true."

There are a few things we can all accept as fact...for the most part. The sky is blue, the grass is green, etc. But after that there is a human problem with a fact. Who decides what is fact and what is not? Since a fact is also determined by personal perceptions of the interpreter.

Science is a well-respected medium of fact-finding, but it’s not flawless. It’s more of a collection of theories that are broadly accepted. Some things that were once considered facts, are now old wives’ tales. They’ve been debunked and replaced with the new "facts." Since new knowledge has replaced the old, was the old knowledge ever really a fact, by definition, in the first place? It was accepted as fact at the time, but science changes. What was considered scientific fact yesterday can very well change tomorrow. What some may have considered fact was nothing more than an idea that people aspired to. And when told something different backed by "evidence," they aspired to the new "fact." So how many things can we really determine to be fact? Almost nothing is cut and dry, folks. There’s all this gray area, and that’s where our hairy friends live.

So what about that "solid, factual evidence? That stuff that we can see and touch? Isn’t it a fact?

Sorry, but here’s where serious science comes into play: quantum physics. Matter, as we term it in science, is not solid. The chair you’re sitting in, the computer you’re working on, and everything else you see and determine to be real, they are not solid; not really. They are just masses of particles vibrating at a certain frequency. All those things you can see, taste, touch, and hold are not real in the sense you understand "real" to be.

So when we understand a little bit more about the real nature of reality, things start to seem a bit hazy and chaotic in the universe, like we have no control over anything, and that nothing is real at all. And it’s a bit scary and often hard for some to accept. Humans need order and structure, and they’ll try desperately to get it. So they’ll spin the whole idea of reality in their favor...just to make themselves feel better...or justify their opinions.

But here’s the interesting part. Humans are the ones that control reality. Each one of us individually creates our own reality as we go. We are the ones who bring order to chaos, and here’s how it’s known: Scientists placed photons, those little particles of light that everything is made of, inside a glass tube. As they observed the photons, they saw that they were chaotic, moving randomly and sporadically. But then they introduced human DNA into the tube. And when they did that, the photons suddenly became ordered. The chaos was ended. Something about introducing human DNA into the tube, caused the photons to start behaving differently. This suggests that human energy brings order to the universe.

Quantum physics has also found that matter behaves a certain way under normal circumstances. But it’s behavior changes dramatically WHEN it’s being observed by humans. Matter changes what it does when we’re watching it, as can be observed in Dr. Quantum’s double slit experiment at the bottom of this page.

But what does all this mean for the case for factual reality? It suggests that humans have a great deal more power over reality than we know. If matter, the stuff that makes up everything we see, changes when we humans are entered into the equation, what does that say? And if our personal reality is created by our very diverse personal perceptions, what does that say about reality? It says that we all see things a bit differently and that creates our own personal reality. And each and every once of us has a different reality that we’ve created for ourselves.

But what does this mean for the debate of the existence of bigfoot? It means that debate about the subject is completely pointless. Since reality is unique to each individual and there is no absolute reality, only individual perceptions, reality can’t possibly be debated. THERE IS NO SINGLE REALITY THAT EVERYONE CAN RECOGNIZE. We all have a different one. Period. End of story.

There is no right and wrong in the debate. Only different views, all which can be supported by some kind of evidence.

Bigfoot exists for some by way of personal perception (they’ve seen them for themselves) and is a myth for others...by way of personal perception... (they haven’t seen them and don’t recognize any evidence of them as being tangible). Those who’ve seen them don’t really need evidence to know they exist. And those that haven’t seen them need factual evidence based on factual reality that doesn’t really exist...or at least is determined by the perceptions of the interpreter.

So what are we left with? Nothing. Different perceptions, different ideas, different realities. 7 billion different, separate, unique realities worldwide.

Albert Einstein once said, "Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a persistent one." And that’s the point of it all. So we should all be more tolerant of others’ ideas about reality. Their ideas come from their own observances and experiences as your ideas come from yours. So IN REALITY nobody’s wrong. Chew on that for a while. *******DF

Hotspot for Bigfoot

This is a sightings report taken by TCC Team Member Jason Morse.
Jason is a Lifelong outdoor enthusiast, trained in wilderness survival tactics, 26 year martial artist, DJ, EMT and amateur writer.

This is a report from 1990 from a witness that wants to remain anonymous. We will call her "Betty".
I was contacted by Betty today. She wanted to share an experience that she had, since she'd never mentioned it before to anyone. This is what she had to say:

"My brother and I were into tracking bear tracks in the snow. For a period of about two months Jan/Feb of 1990 we found what you would call Bigfoot tracks. Giant human-like tracks in the snow, about 18 inches long. Unless a 9 foot man with no shoes on walked through our back yard at night I would call it a big foot. Yes we were kids then but I assure you I still have a clear memory of what we saw and it was not in a child's imagination. Behind our house is miles and miles of endless wilderness."

Lately, New Hampshire, particularly the little town of Newmarket, has been a hot spot for Bigfoot activity. This report from a reliable lady, as well as the report from Cody Archambeault, shows positive signs that these creatures weren't just passing through, and have seemed to have found a place that they can call "home."

Bigfoot Crosses HWY. 441

I recently got another sightings report. They shared possibly two sightings. The first one was in 2000.

AB said -
"So everybody thinks I'm crazy but I know I saw a Bigfoot back in 2000 around 12am cross a main highway in 3 steps right in front my truck and a friend was with me and we both looked at each other with a puzzled look and he said don't fu**ing stop the location was highway 441 Holden, LA just about 50yards from tickfaw river."

More recent encounter with some odd sounds.
AB said -
"Now recently I have heard loud growls across the road from my house which is around Bear creek hunting club and even my wife and mom have heard it and just tonight I was putting some deer corn out by the river it was about 6:00pm and something slammed a tree hard enough to shake the limbs and I of course ran because I know what's out there, I've seen back in 2000."

I'm still following up on this report and hope to set up a meeting with one of our TCC researchers and AB.

Thanks
Tom

I recently got and email from Dustin Ostrowski, some of you might remember him he had a sighting once before and we did a interview with him, well it appears he has had another sighting.

Dustin and his friend Levi Byers were out deer hunting and Dustin managed to shoot a deer. The sighting took place while they were looking for the deer Dustin had shot.
Dustin told me:
"I was looking for my deer I shot! I saw what looked like big foot!
We were trailing a doe that I had shot and looked up and at around 75 yards away and it was there"

One of the things I ask Dustin was if he found the deer, I was thinking maybe the bigfoot was trying to get a free meal.
Here is what Dustin told me
"Yes I found the deer. I wasn't gonna let him/her get me from getting my deer. lol"

Here is the report info:

Name of  witnesses: Dustin Ostrowski & Levi Byers.
Both boys are 15 years old.
Date of Sighting: I think it was 12/28/12
