Large Bird Sighting

I got the following report in a few weeks ago. It is a report of a very large bird. I'm not sure if it is something unusual or not but I wanted to share it in case others have seen something similar. Could it be a thunderbird? I really don't know.

Here is the report

Was it a Thunderbird?

I recently got in this report of a very large bird sighting. I'm not sure what kind of bird the witness saw and described but many might say it was a possible thunderbird. Thunderbirds are a cryptid large bird believed to be a predatory bird, larger and perhaps stronger than known species.

Possible Thunderbird Sighting in Lawrence county

We have not had a report of a possible Thunderbird in a while, but we got one just a few days ago. For those that may not know, a Thunderbird is a very large bird that Native American legend speaks of with a wingspan approximately 20 feet. Reports on size, origin, and color do vary a little from case to case. Some even compare Thunderbirds to pterosaurs and these sightings sometime overlap.

Probably the most notable case took place in July 1977, a boy from Lawndale, Illinois claimed to have been attacked by a giant bird, which clamped onto him and then lifted him for a distance of at least 30 yards. He managed to escape unharmed

Sighting Location
We recently got in a Thunderbird report. As you may know, if you follow our website, we have taken in numerous reports of these extremely large birds. While Thunderbirds are mainly considered a myth by many, reports of these large birds have been documented for a very long time. Many of these reports are very creditable.

For those who might be unfamiliar with Thunderbirds, here is a little information.

The Thunderbird is a legendary creature in certain North American indigenous peoples' history and culture. It is considered a supernatural being of power and strength. It is especially important, and frequently depicted, in the art, songs, and oral histories of many Pacific Northwest Coast cultures, but is also found in various forms among some peoples of the American Southwest, East Coast of the United States, Great Lakes, and Great Plains.

Thunderbird is a term used in cryptozoology to describe large, bird-like creatures, generally identified with the Thunderbird of Native American tradition. While the fossil record does show that giant birds (teratorns) with wingspans between 4 and 5 m (13 and 16 ft) were likely contemporary with early man, the creature is generally regarded as a myth or legend.

With that said, here is the report.

I was recently contacted on Facebook about a possible Thunderbird sighting near Table Rock, Wyoming. For those who might not be familiar with the term Thunderbird let me give you a little more information.

Thunderbird is a term used in cryptozoology to describe large, bird-like creatures, generally identified with the Thunderbird of Native American tradition. These massive birds are normally described as being black in color and as having a wingspan between 12 and 18 ft. The fossil record does show that giant birds once existed but for the most part the Thunderbird is considered a myth. The only problem is that there continues to be sporadic sighting of this very large bird.

Here is the most recent possible sighting of a Thunderbird.

This photo is thought to be a promotional picture for a film.

With my recent report, from Roger in Michigan, of a possible Thunderbird sighting. I did just a little digging on the internet looking for past reports of the giant bird. I ran across a report from Alaska that I had not seen before. I thought it might be a good idea to share that report here. I take no credit for this report, as it was not sent to me, but it appeared in the Anchorage Daily News and was written by Peter Porco.

Here is the newspaper write up.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A giant winged creature, like something out of Jurassic Park, has reportedly been sighted several times in Southwest Alaska in recent weeks.

Villagers in Togiak and Manokotak say they have seen a huge bird that's much bigger than anything they have seen before.

A pilot says he spotted the creature while flying passengers to Manokotak last week. He calculated that its wingspan matched the length of a wing on his Cessna 207. That's about 14 feet.

Other people have put the wingspan in a similar range.

Scientists aren't sure what to make of the reports. No one doubts that people in the region west of Dillingham have seen a very large rapto-like bird. But biologists and other people familiar with big Alaska birds say they're skeptical it's that big.

A recent sighting of the mystery bird occurred Oct. 10 when Moses Coupchiak, a 43-year-old heavy equipment operator from Togiak, 40 miles west of Manokotak, saw the bird flying toward him from about two miles away as he worked his tractor.

"At first I thought it was one of those old-time Otter planes," Coupchiak said. "Instead of continuing toward me, it banked to the left, and that's when I noticed it wasn't a plane."

The bird was "something huge," he said. "The wing looks a little wider than the Otter's, maybe as long as the Otter plane."

The bird flew behind a hill and disappeared. Coupchiak got on the radio and warned people in Togiak to tell their children to stay away.

Pilot John Bouker said he was highly skeptical of reports of "this great big eagle" that is two or three times the size of a bald eagle. "I didn't put any thought into it."

But early this week while flying into Manokotak, Bouker, owner of Bristol Bay Air Service, looked out his left window and 1,000 feet away, "there's this big ... . bird," he said.

"The people in the plane all saw him," Bouker said. "He's huge, he's huge, he's really, really big. You wouldn't want to have your children out."

Nicolai Alakayak, a freight and passenger driver from Manokotak who was flying with Bouker, said the creature looked like an eagle and was as large as "a little Super Cub."

Comparison to an eagle, certainly. Super Cub? Probably not, scientists said.

"I'm certainly not aware of anything with a 14-foot wingspan that's been alive for the last 100,000 years," said federal raptor specialist Phil Schemf in Juneau.

Schemf, other biologists, a village police officer and teachers at the Manokotak School said the sightings could be of a Steller's sea eagle, a species native to northeast Asia and one of the world's largest eagles. It's about 50 percent bigger than a bald eagle.

The wingspan is right in line with not only Roger's recent report, but many others. I'm sure there are some misidentifications in some of the reports, but it would seem logical to think that there has to be something to them.

Thanks
~Tom~

General area of the sighting.

Possible Thunderbird Report and Witness Interview

The following is a combination of a submitted report, an email exchange, and a witness phone interview. The witness had two separate sightings of a possible Thunderbird. The Thunderbird is described as a large bird-like creature that is normally tied to Native American tradition. Fossil records do show that giant birds with a wing span between 12 and 18 feet did exist. The Thunderbird is largely thought of as a myth nowadays, but reports of sightings keep being documented from time to time.

Here is the report and interview with Robert.

Large Bird Seen

Large Unknown Bird Report

I recently got in this report from Canada, of a very large unknown bird. Gordon, the person who submitted the report, describes the creature in detail. Could this very large unrecognized bird be the famed Thunderbird?

Here is the report:

Monday, June 8, 2015

I got in a report of a Thunderbird sighting. This is the first one I have got in a long time. By reading over the report I think it is safe to assume that this has never been reported until now.

Here is the report.

- Start Report -

Name: Luci

Email Address: On file

State: MO

County:

Date of Sighting: early 90's

Time of Day: mid day

Nearest Town: Maryville

Length of Sighting: several minutes

How many Witnesses: 2

Any Photos/Videos: no

Describe sighting in detail:
I saw on your map this "thunderbird" sighting and it took me back to a day of bird hunting long ago. Myself, my now ex husband, and our Brittany, Scout had gotten an early start to a beautiful day of quail and pheasant hunting. It was mid day and we were on the long trek back to the truck when we heard Scout just going nuts. He was a very calm and professional bird dog and we ran as fast as we could because we were very concerned. Holy crap.
We couldn't believe our eyes and to this day I still can't quite believe what we saw. A huge, monstrous dark gray bird apparently stuck in the mud with it's wings just flailing violently. Scout was lunging at it as if he'd hit the jackpot. That bird was at least 20 foot from tip of wing to tip of wing. I was young at the time and my husband simply explained to me that hawks could get very huge. I told a few people about it and they simply told me that I must be mistaken, that no bird gets that big. I know what I saw that day. I'll never forget it. I had never heard of this "thunderbird" until I saw your map and read about the sighting in Nebraska in 1990. The area we were hunting that day is close to the NE southern border. Thank you for your web site. I now know that I'm not crazy and that I really DID see what I know I saw.

- End Report -

Thanks goes to Luci for sending in the report. It seems that most of these Thunderbird sightings happen in the north.

For those who may not know, a Brittany is a breed of dog that is used for bird hunting.

Thanks
~Tom~

Is this a Thunderbird?
I got this report submitted last night. It is one of a possible Thunderbird. It had a couple of photos with it and I have also attempted to enhance one of the photos.

Here is what Mark had to say in his report.

I was just surfing the internet and ran across this picture taken in Pennsylvanian back in 2008. I can't recall ever seeing it before.

The story goes something like this:

Two men were traveling route 40 when he saw a strange object above the treeline. At first they thought it to be some type of aircraft but then they seen the wings flap. His next thought was that it was a large bird but then the creature made a turn towards his car and then made several laps above his car and they realized it was not a bird. One man described the body as being covered in dark fur and as having the wings being bat like. The 2 followed the creature a short ways and was able to take the photo above. The 2 men left after that out of fear.

Here is a zoom in on the figure

Now, I don't know if the photo is real or not but it sure looks like a winged figured. Could this possibly be a picture of the famous Mothman?

Sorry I don't know more about this photo or story. If you have more information feel free to share it.

Thanks
~Tom~

Van Buren County, MI

I just got a report in late last night of a possible Thunderbird sighting in Van Buren County, MI
This is a pretty recent sighting. Here is the report.

- Start Report -

Name: Matt
Email Address: withheld
State: Michigan
County: Van Buren
Date of Sighting: 6/14/14
Time of Day: 12:00 PM
Nearest Town: Breedsville, Michigan
Length of Sighting: 1 Minute
How many Witnesses: 3
Any Photos/Videos: No
Describe sighting in detail:
We were working on the lawn on Jeptha Lake in Grand Junction, Michigan Van Buren County SW Michigan) when the high noon sun became obscured by a very large bird. I was looking at the ground when the huge outline of a giant bird covered the ground I was looking at.

I looked up and about 300-500 feet up (too high to notice any features except it being all black and 10-16 foot wingspan, I'm guessing around 12-14 feet specifically) was a giant "hawk-like" bird. It was circling the lake and was checking out there area.

It is a very high populated deer area, so maybe looking for deer?

I alerted my gf and brother who were with me and we all watch as it continued its circle until we lost it behind a giant tree. We waited to see if it would circle around but it must have continued the opposite way.

We watched it for around a full minute.

It's tough to estimate size as it was so far up, but there is no way it was smaller than a 10 foot wingspan, which makes it too large to be any known species in the area. The DNR suggested a Turkey Vulture of Bald Eagle (if definitely was not a Bald Eagle).

If it was a turkey vulture, it was larger than the largest known size by a matter of a couple feet.

I have been since then been watching hawks and other large birds carefully. Ive sized up 4 foot wingspan
hawks and seen what they look like even a hundred feet in the air. No comparison, and they are 200+ feet lower than the bird I saw.

From what I have read, it may be a Thunderbird, or some giant hawk. Anyone have any ideas what I saw?

- End Report -

This sure sounds like a Thunderbird  when compared to what has been described by other witnesses.
If anyone from that are also seen this large bird, please contact us.
A thanks goes to Matt for submitting the report.

Thanks
~Tom~
