An Interview With Cypto-Artist Dan Baker
By Dorraine Fisher

We love all of our cryptid artists but out sculptors are unique and special as they create a multi-dimensional depictions of our hairy friends. And crypto-sculptor, Dan Baker is by far one of our favorites. And he has a very unique perspective based on his personal experiences and his many collected reports from others. And based on the latest information on Bigfoot, he may be closer than anyone to having some of the most honest depictions. Only time and research will tell. But in the meantime, Dan is creating sculptures that tell an interesting story about bigfoot.

Dorraine: When did you first become interested in pursuing art?

Dan:  I became interested in art at a very young age. I remember as a very young boy, I would be eager for Sunday to come around so that I could get my hands on the cartoons in the funny pages. I would sit for hours and attempt to draw my favorite cartoon characters.
I have pretty much stayed with drawing cartoon characters most of my life but stopping about ten to twelve years ago.

Dorraine: Have you always lived in Ohio? And what influence has that had on your art, if any?

Dan: I haven't always lived in Ohio. I lived in both Michigan and Indiana for a while.
I've had two primary influences on my art.  The first would be both the cartoons of Warner Bros. and Disney. The second would be my obsession with early hominids, great apes and bigfoot.

Dorraine: What made you pursue sasquatch art?

Dan: For a while, I was making Christmas figurines out of polymer clay.  I made everything from elves to nutcrackers. Then one day as I was doing some online bigfoot research, I decided to try and sculpt a bigfoot bust. On thing led to another and I did one after another. Every individual hair was cut, rolled and put in place. One at a time. It was very time consuming!

Dorraine: Have you had a bigfoot encounter of your own?

Dan: Yes, I had a bigfoot sighting of my own on June of 2013. It was about 12:30am and I was at our basecamp with my wife and a property owners wife. We heard what sounded like bipedal footsteps just inside the tree line about 35 yds. From camp. I jumped up with my night vision and caught site of the Squatch when I canned left to about my ten o'clock position.
Four other people witnessed the Squatch after I did.

Dorraine: I know you didn’t get a good look at the creature’s face. So how do you attempt to depict the face of a creature considered by many to be mythical?  Where does your prototype come from?

Dan: So many people have described the faces of the creatures they witnessed as being like that of a Neanderthal, or Native American, including my wife Sue. Then there are those who have described something more apelike. So, I have attempted to sculpt both types. I have however sculpted a kind of whimsical little baby Squatch named "Skookum". He is my wife's and won't part with him even though I’ve been offered quite a bit of money for him.

Dorraine: What keeps you inspired to do crypto-art?

Dan: I think that trying to create something that has the possibility of looking like any creature that someone has seen is somewhat of a driving force to keep sculpting even though I have taken a rather long hiatus from it at this point.

Dorraine: Tell us about your research group.

Dan: American Primate Exploration / A.P.E.  is a group of like- minded people who are trying to make sense and provide absolute proof to mainstream science of a species of relic hominid through proper evidence collection and field research.  We research early hominids and great apes in an effort to put pieces together of an enormously huge puzzle of possibilities. Many of our people in the field have many years of hunting and tracking experience under their belts and know all the sights and sounds of the indigenous wildlife as well as the vegetation in their areas which can be edible or poisonous. We make every effort to keep it real and not allow any of the "woo" inside our group.

Dorraine: Tell us about your new Educational Visual Aids Fund.

Dan: My Educational Visual Aids Fund on "Go Fund Me " is an effort to raise needed funds to obtain early hominid and great ape skulls and life casts to use as hands-on tools to show people when we do our public lectures. Our lectures are primarily broken into two parts. Part one is speaking about bigfoot, encounters, sightings, etc. Part two is showing and speaking about early hominids and great apes in an effort to show people the possibilities of a relic hominid, similarities and differences in many different species, their relative sizes, possible diets, musculature, skeletal features and how long ago they were here on earth.
Showing photos up on a screen simply does not in any way compare to being able to hold a 2.8 million year old skull up for everyone to be able to see and touch for themselves.
I have been able to obtain a museum quality replica mandible of Paranthropus Boisei and it is absolutely amazing ! It is also in the neighborhood of 2.8 million years old !
It will be used in future lectures as well. People will be able to see this specimen up very close with their own eyes !
Currently, Dr. Jeff Meldrum, Dr. Esteban Sarmiento, and Paleoanthropologist Ran Cartwright are on board with me and my fund.

Dorraine: Do you have any other favorite subjects for your artwork?

Dan: I really only specialize on bigfoot or hominid art at this point. Maybe a few little cartoon characters here and there from time to time just to change things up!

Dorraine: Over the years, have you developed any theories or philosophies about Sasquatches?

Dan: Up to about four years ago, I was in the Gigantopithecus camp when it came to my thoughts of what bigfoot was. I have to say that the late Grover Krantz had a lot to do with that.
But then I began really studying paleoanthropology and primatology and I began to look at sasquatch as more of a relic hominid. First of all, we have countless footcasts that show a bipedal creature albeit flat footed which points to mid-tarsal flexibility.  (Many humans including the great primatologist Esteban Sarmiento have this condition) Next, many eyewitnesses have described a creature resembling a Neanderthal or Native American. These are hominid traits. The musculature appears to show some features of a great ape, however, many early hominids had the same features such as very powerful arms and the trapezoid muscles that are so prominent in the "Patty" film which would limit the ability of the creature to turn its head the same as we would. Very large, thick chests with powerful pectoral muscles have also been witnessed. The very robust mandible and sagittal crest are also traits shared by both great apes and early hominids such as Paranthropus Boisei or Paranthropus Robustus and gorillas.
Then we have to think of the intelligence of these creatures. We all know they are very smart and seem to have an awareness that we as humans have. The size of the brain would most likely dwarf ours. (Speculation)
I believe that sasquatch may be a relic hominid that has developed along its very own branch of the evolutionary tree, sharing traits of great apes but only to an extent both physically and in mannerisms. I believe that instead of dropping all of the great ape mannerisms and traits, they have maintained them to this day. (quite possibly an asset to their way of life)
I could go on and on, but I'll stop here.

Dorraine: Is there somewhere people can see a gallery of your work? Do you have a website or blog?

Dan: I don't have a website or blog to show my art, but will gladly show some photos here.

Dorraine: What is your favorite medium for your art?

Dan: My favorite medium in art is polymer clay.  You can let your imagination and creativity come to life in 3D.

Dorraine: What else do you like to do outside of art?

Dan: I have to say that I love to go camping and spend time in the outdoors doing field research and being with nature. I love all the fresh air and the creatures that we come across along with the beautiful scenery we come across.

Dorraine: What do you do for a living? And does that have any correlation with or influence on the way you pursue your art?

Dan: I no longer work everyday due to my M.S. And many other ailments. I guess my work now is my research although going into the field is becoming much more difficult, so, I study early hominids and great apes and look forward to future lectures where I can still make people happy and go "Wow" by showing and telling them things that perhaps they didn't know.

Dorraine:   Is there anything else you'd like to tell us.

Dan:  I would like to ask folks to please help out my Educational Visual Aids Fund on "Go Fund Me " so that I can continue to be active at least in teaching folks about both bigfoot and early hominids and great apes.

Special thanks to Dan Baker.

Just who is looking for Bigfoot?

Researchers, Trolls, and Armchairs
Who Makes The Biggest Contributions To Bigfoot Research?
By Dorraine Fisher

I was recently involved in a friendly debate about the term “armchair researchers.”  Just what do we mean if we use the term?  It seems there’s more than one definition.   And it begs the question of who actually makes a contribution to real bigfoot research and who doesn’t.  Who should get the credit for the advancement of the subject and who should not?

First, in order to do bigfoot research, you don’t have to be a scientist.  Some knowledge of science is helpful, but certainly not mandatory. But we always want to acknowledge all our scientists in the field who have chosen to tackle such a controversial subject and also help give more legitimacy to the subject with their hard work. And they’ve chosen to do that work in a scientific climate that is less than enthusiastic.  You are greatly appreciated for what you do here.

But we owe a huge debt to all the non-scientists who have spent countless painstaking hours combing the woods, cataloging findings, searching for evidence, building trust, and learning everything they can in ground zero, often with very limited resources and funding.  It’s a lot like looking for a needle in a haystack sometimes, but they do it.  And a lot of our greatest knowledge has come from findings from researchers who aren’t scientists.

But are these the only ones who make a contribution to bigfoot research?  I think not.
Let’s keep in mind the hundreds of researchers who would love to comb the woods and do that kind of research but are unable for some reason. Health reasons may be a factor, or they may not be able to travel to the rural areas for some reason, or maybe they simply are interested, but don’t live in an area or country where bigfoot is thought to exist.

These people, from their desks and chairs at home, study their subject diligently. They  watch the field research of others, they watch documentaries, they join in discussions , and they also may examine the evidence and offer intelligent theories and ideas of their own.  And they offer support and encouragement to those in the field who sometimes may feel that a lot of what they do is in vain.  They ask questions, they learn, and they do what they can. Are they any less significant?  No. That is a contribution. Their work and support means something.

Out in the field, it’s sometimes easy to stop seeing the forest for the trees.  And sometimes outside opinions coming from a different perspective are helpful in bending public perception and opening up minds.  Not always, but sometimes.

And let’s also not forget those people who write blogs and articles on the subject. I’ve been called an armchair researcher because I’m a writer on the subject.  What about all those people who write books, create documentaries, and do regular radio shows on the subject? Are they armchair researchers too?

No they aren’t. They make a huge contribution. They give a voice to all those people who may not have had one otherwise. They help convey all the sightings stories, evidence, and theories that all add up to the big picture of the existence of bigfoot; stories that need to be heard and wouldn’t be heard without being given a forum to do so.

And then there are the skeptics. Yes, they make a contribution too. Most true skeptics are very knowledgeable on the subject and always aim for sound logic and reasoning in the subject of bigfoot. They keep researchers sharp. They ask the pertinent questions and they keep the rest of us on our toes trying to answer them.  Even though there are disagreements, the other side of the argument is always important too.

So then… just exactly who are these “armchair researchers?”

The term “armchair researcher” has become a somewhat sarcastic term for those in the community often referred to as “trolls.”  And most researchers agree these are the individuals in the community who make absolutely no contribution to the research, but spend a great deal of time interrogating and criticizing those that do.

But nobody has worked harder to define the terms than Ohio researcher and crypto artist Dan Baker,  a self-described “disabled field researcher.” Dan is a field researcher with disabilities that sometimes prevent him from doing everything he’d like to do in the field. But he also strongly acknowledges the contribution of those researchers who are completely disabled and do all their good work from their homes.

But here is how he defined the terms:

1) Disabled researcher - Any person who does not have the physical capability to go out into the field and conduct research, but spends a great deal of time reading and studying journals and books, and researching online; a person who constructively uses their knowledge to further educate others.

2) Armchair researcher / Troll - Any person who has the physical capability to go into the field.  However, they choose to sit behind a computer and ridicule both disabled researchers and healthy field researchers alike; the demanding people who have no facts to back up their claims but demand facts from others.

So, what do you think? Do you agree with Dan’s assessment?

Bigfoot researcher
Dan Baker working in the field

This post by Thomas Marcum, Thomas is the founder/leader of the cryptozoology and paranormal research organization known as The Crypto Crew. Over 20 years experience with research and investigation of unexplained activity, working with video and websites. A trained wild land firefighter and a published photographer, and poet.

Interview With Bigfoot Researcher Dan Baker

In our 17th interview in the series, I get to interview Sculptor and Bigfoot Researcher Dan Baker.
Dan has also recently form a fast growing Facebook group called American Primate Exploration or just simply A.P.E., So make sure to check it out.
I hope you enjoy this interview.

- Start Interview -

TM: How long have you been researching/studying Bigfoot?

DB: Studying Bigfoot in general for 20+ years. Actively involved in field research for 4 years. .

TM: What got you interested in Bigfoot, Was there a particular event that got you started?

DB: I was 12 years old in 1967 when Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin made the world famous film and I was hooked from that time on. I had the opportunity to tell Bob Gimlin that very same thing and his reply was "I'm sorry". Lol .

TM: During your research/studying of Bigfoot, have you ever encountered aggressive behavior or felt in danger from a Bigfoot?(details please)

DB: Once while out in the field, some of our team members were growled at, and on another occasion, a large rock was thrown and hit a guardrail on a road about 250 yards away from us. We never really felt in any kind of serious danger.

TM: It seems Skeptics are always ready to attack Bigfoot research, How do you deal with it?

DB: My answer to skeptics is that "Absence of proof is not proof of absence". I have grown a much thicker skin than I once had, and I continue to move ahead.

TM: Would you like to see Bigfoot accepted and/or proven to the general public?

DB: I would like to see more acceptance of Bigfoot, but not at the expense of the creature's well being. I believe that educating the public is the first step, but it should be done in a way that it includes the participation of the people in the learn process. I.E. question and answer periods etc.

TM: What is your favorite time of year to research/study Bigfoot, When do you have your most success?

DB: My favorite time of year for research is the fall. It seems as though there is more movement during this time of year around the harvest.

TM: Do you have a favorite Bigfoot story or report?

DB: My favorite story is of my sighting that Dorraine Fisher interviewed me about. (Found HERE)

TM: What would you be doing if you wasn't researching/studying Bigfoot?

DB: I would most likely be studying anthropology and paleontology if I weren't doing Bigfoot research.

Thanks for doing the interview and good luck with all that you do.

Dan with the legendary Bob Gimlin from the famous Patterson-Gimlin bigfoot footage. The footage shot that day in 1967 was of a female Bigfoot and the footage is still being debated and reviewed all these years later.

A Sculptor’s View of Bigfoot
Bigfoot Artist Dan Baker’s Sighting
By TCC Team Member  Dorraine Fisher

Bigfoot sightings are usually fleeting. And often, the viewer is too stunned to give a truly accurate description of the details. But Dan Baker, a noted bigfoot artist, has a slightly unique way of seeing things, and, from the perspective of his work, offered a few details to the mix when he, after a lot of searching, finally spotted the creature in his home state of Ohio last week, June 15, 2013. And his sighting confirmed that even a long time Bigfoot believer like Dan can be overwhelmed and caught off guard in seeing a creature you really don’t know exists until you actually see one.

According to Dan, it was a pretty productive research day for him and his fellow researcher, Paul Hayes, along with Paul’s cousin, Chris, who both found and cast tracks earlier that day. They also found stick structures that they determined to be new in the area as they had researched the same area before when the structures hadn’t been there.

The men also observed an area where some huge, heavy logs had been placed over a bridge blocking anyone from entering a swamp area the men frequented.  A strange occurrence that led the men to believe that someone or something didn’t want them back there. And also, the size of the logs was questionable.  “Whoever or whatever put them there had to be pretty darn strong,” Dan said. And they headed back to their base camp.

That night, Dan wanted to attempt to pick up some sounds with his H2 recorder. So he and his fellow researcher headed into the swamp packing his night vision monocular. They found a small, fresh sapling that had been broken.  It alerted them that maybe they didn’t want to go very deep into the swamp. The men then made a quick sweep of the bottom land and headed back to their camp. And that’s when it happened. This is how Dan told the story to his group, The Genoskwa Project .

“As we were heading north across the backside of the ridge on the bottom, we came across a VERY nasty, putrid stench that is very hard to describe. We drove out of the smell in about 150 feet and started back up over the ridge. As we approached the tree that we saw across the trail earlier in the day, we saw there was a new one that was even larger lying across the same spot.”
“We made it back to base camp,” Dan continued. “And Kane (the property owner) reported into Paul who was out walking the ridgeline. Paul asked Kane to come up on the ridgeline and meet them up there. Kane was just a little reluctant but nevertheless got on his 4-wheeler and went up there. I stayed back at base camp. About 5 minutes after Kane left, we all heard what appeared to be bi-pedal footsteps walking just inside the tree line.”
“I asked the ladies, "Did you hear that"? They both said yes. I got up and grabbed my night vision [goggles]. I walked over to the edge of the pavilion at base camp and started panning the tree line from right to left which was the direction of the footsteps. When I got to about my 10 o'clock position, I could not believe my eyes! All I could say was "Ohhhhhhhh myyyyyyyyy" !                                   That's when Sue (my wife) and Leanna (the property owner’s wife) came up beside me. Leanna had a very powerful flashlight and shined it up where I was pointing. Sure enough, she and Sue saw it as well! Standing approximately 100 feet just inside the tree line in between a large sapling and a fairly large tree, there was a Squatch !!! It appeared to be around 7 feet tall!”

“What did the creature look like?” I asked.

The shape of the creatures head was similar to that of a silverback gorilla. It seemed to have a sagittal crest. The traps (trapezius muscles or neck muscles) appeared to start from the middle of the head and slope down to the shoulders and they were huge in comparison to a human. The shoulders were massive and very broad.”

“So you were honing in on the upper body of the creature?” I asked.

“I observed these features because all of my sculptures are busts, and these are the things that I always concentrate on. I couldn't distinguish the color or sex through my night vision, and none of the other witnesses who saw it after I did could make out any of those details either.”

“Did you think you were in danger?” I asked.

“We never felt threatened in any way. In fact it was very passive just swaying from side to side. It just seemed almost curious about us and was simply watching us.”

“So how did this encounter end?” I asked.

“The ladies frantically attempted to contact the rest of team on our radio, but as luck

would have it, it couldn't reach them. All the time, I was watching the squatch through

my night vision.”

            “What was it doing?”

“It would sway from side to side and then pause. Then it would sway again. I don't know why, but I looked away for a few seconds and when I came back to the spot, it seemed to be gone. Finally Kane was on his way back to base camp and Paul was with him on the 4-wheeler. The ladies were very excited and telling them what we had just witnessed together. Leanne took Paul over and showed him where we saw the creature.”
“After a minute or so, Paul called me over and asked if the creature was between the sapling and larger tree. I said yes. And Paul said, "That son-of-a-gun is still there!”
“Sure enough, I looked through my night vision and there it was AGAIN, only hunched down! Paul formulated a plan to approach the creature and try to get a better look. About this time, the rest of the team had made it back to base camp. They all got their flashlights out and approached the tree line. As they started to head up there, you could see tree branches moving. When they got there, the creature was gone!”

Later, Paul returned to the sighting spot and found the grass there had been crunched down.

“Do you think it knew you could see it with your night vision?”

“I don't think it realized it. Because it just stood there. Even when Leanne shined the flashlight up there, it didn't seem to phase it. It didn't really move until the other guys went up towards it, and all I could see from where I was standing were tree branches moving up the hillside.”

“So how were you feeling about all this at that moment?”

“I have to say that I was somewhat overwhelmed, and even kind of freaked out after the reality set in. No matter how bad you want to see a Sasquatch, your mind is not fully prepared for that kind of shock.”

“So how do you feel now about what you saw?” I asked.

I have to say that THIS was one of the most incredible things to EVER happen in my life.”

During this particular encounter, the creature was spotted by the entire group of researchers. Not just Dan himself. They believe a small family group of sasquatches lives in that area. Sadly, the researchers didn’t have the equipment to get any photos or video of the creature in the pitch darkness. But undoubtedly, it was a moment none of them will ever forget.  ********DF
