Mountain Monsters - Bigfoot Editions - Pt 1

Love 'em or hate 'em, we have all probably heard of the TV show and have probably watched more than a few episodes. Among the creatures they have tried to trap with Willie's fantastic creations are varieties of bigfoot. Legend and some reality meets TV in their shows, and that is sometimes worth further investigation. So let's look for the kernels of truth among the chaff of TV.
The first bigfoot that the boys decided to tackle was the Ohio Grassman.

He is said to be a 7ft tall, 300 lb. bigfoot-type creature, bipedal, allegedly eating wheat and other planted grasses to supplement his diet. He is found throughout the state, not just in the southern portion, although there are many "hotspots" in that part of the state, including Salt Fork State Park. Not everyone refer to our bigfoot as "Grassman". We do say bigfoot, or sasquatch, or use our favorite nicknames like "The Big Man" or "The Big Guy".

Oh Wait - There Are More Theories!

Although the Bigfoot-Giganto Theory is the most debated and seems to be the most popular, there are other theories out there to which believers subscribe.

Another theory is the Paranthropus Theory which is similar to the Bigfoot-Giganto Theory.  It states the bigfoot is a descendant of Paranthropus which is a genus of bipedal apes. These apes are said to have evolved in Africa from the Australopithecines. The Australopithecines are the same ancestors that humans are believed to have come from. This theory ties human's past closer to bigfoot's and takes in the bipedal aspect and the similar foot development.

The Myakka Skunk Ape

In December 2000, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Department received an anonymous letter from a woman that enclosed two photographs.

The letter expressed her concerns over the apparent Orangutan [so declared by her husband] that was raiding the apples from her porch on a nightly basis. Not knowing yet just what was taking her apples, and when she realized it was back, she stepped out into the yard with her camera. She was shooting blindly in the dark, not being able to see exactly where the animal was hiding in the palmettos.

Tonight's Finding Bigfoot show looks to be a pretty good one for a couple reason. One reason, would be to get a looking inside Loren Coleman's Cryptozoology Museum. For many of us, who have never been there, it should be a good little treat. Another reason that I'm interested in tonight's episode is because we have taken in a few reports from Maine and many from close to the border in New Hampshire.

Here is the synopsis for tonight's show.

The team travels for the first time Maine. They split up to interview eyewitnesses and embark on multiple solo investigations. Matt records multiple bigfoot howls, and is confident they've pinned down a Pine Tree State Sasquatch.

Here is the preview trailer.

Make sure to tune in tonight, it should be one of the better shows.

Thanks
~Tom~

The Enfield Monster refers to reports of an unidentified creature around Enfield, Illinois, United States in April 1973. The reports were covered by the news media at the time, with some suggesting they may have been caused by a wild ape or escaped kangaroo.
Used as a case study for a paper on social contagion in 1978, sociologists cite the episode as an example of collective behavior where a group or crowd can be affected by the spread of "group emotions" such as "panics, hysterias, collective visions, and extreme instances of suggestibility.

At about 9:30 on the night of April 25, 1973, Henry McDaniel heard a scratching sound at his front door. He looked out, and saw something that he thought might be a bear. Taking a gun and flashlight, he headed outside into a strong wind and saw a creature between two rosebushes. He later said "It had three legs on it, a short body, two little short arms, and two pink eyes as big as flashlights. It stood four and a half feet tall and was grayish-colored." He added later that it was "almost like a human body".

McDaniel fired four shots at the creature, one shot hitting it and causing it to make a hiss "much like a wildcat's", before fleeing towards a nearby railway embankment, covering 50 feet in three jumps. McDaniel called the local authorities who discovered footprints in the soft earth near the house, which McDaniel described as dog-like in shape, with six toe pads. The police considered McDaniel to be "rational and sober" in his reporting of the incident. In a later press interview, McDaniel said "If they do find it, they will find more than one and they won't be from this planet, I can tell you that."
Investigators interviewing nearby residents were told that Greg Garrett, a ten-year-old neighbor of McDaniel, claimed to have encountered the creature half an hour before McDaniel did, and that the creature had stepped on his feet, tearing his tennis shoes to shreds. The boy later told Western Illinois University researchers that his report was a hoax "to tease Mr. M and have fun with an out of town newsman."

Two weeks later on May 6, McDaniel called the radio station WWKI claiming to have seen the creature again, at 3am that morning. It was negotiating the trestles of the railroad tracks near his home, and McDaniel said "I saw something moving out on the railroad track and there it stood. I didn't shoot at it or anything. It started on down the railroad track. It wasn't in a hurry or anything." A search party including WWKI's news director Rick Rainbow explored the area later that day, and reported observing an "apelike" creature standing in an abandoned building near McDaniel's house. They claimed to have made a recording of the creature's cries, and fired a shot at it before it fled. Cryptozoologist Loren Coleman investigated the case and the sound recording.

Two days later, a day after McDaniel was interviewed on local radio, the local press reported that police were called to investigate reports of gunfire, and arrested five young men from out of town who had come to Enfield in order to photograph the creature, carrying shotguns and rifles "for protection", the men having claimed to have sighted the creature. The White County sheriff dismissed reports of this as a "monster hunting expedition" as an exaggeration, saying that the men were just "out drinking and raising hell", mentioning the monster only briefly during questioning. The men were charged with hunting violations.

The incidents were reported widely in the press at the time – it appeared in newspapers throughout the state on 27 April 1973, and on 7 May there was an interview on radio station WGN, Chicago and articles in the Chicago Daily News, the Moline Dispatch, Champaign-Urbana Courier and the Alton Telegraph. There were earlier articles in the Carmi Times, and an updated summary of the events appeared in Pennsylvania's Reading Eagle in August 1973. After the arrest of the five men who had arrived to hunt the creature, residents of Enfield expressed fears that press coverage would lead to further "monster hunters", who might inadvertently shoot citizens or livestock.

It was suggested that the creature may have been a kangaroo escaped from a nearby zoo, which would explain the "three legs" description as the tails of kangaroos look like a third leg. McDaniel was adamant that the creature "wasn't no kangaroo", having owned such a creature as a pet while on military service in Australia, and noting that kangaroos have narrow faces and tracks that leave claw marks. Following media coverage of the creature, an Ohio man contacted a local newspaper stating that the creature may have been his pet kangaroo, Macey, which had been lost or stolen a year previously.

A few days after the event, United Press International quoted an anthropology student who suggested that the creature may have been a wild ape, noting that such animals had been reported throughout the Mississippi area since 1941.

Now, don't confuse this with the Enfield Poltergeist, which was the name given to the claims of poltergeist activity at a council house in Brimsdown, Enfield, England.

What I found interesting and mildly amusing, about this tale is how the hunting party went after it and got arrested. It reminded me of people nowadays going after Bigfoot with rifles. It can become dangerous.

What do you think the Enfield Monster is? I'm leaning towards it being a kangaroo.

Thanks

Area where creature was seen. (photo provided by Corey and Tye)
Over the weekend, I got in this report of a possible sighting of a Shunka Warakin. For those who may not know, the Shunka Warakin is a wolf/hyena type creature mostly reported out west.

Here is the report.

- Start Report -

Name: Corey ******
Email Address: On file
State: Iowa
County: Van Buren
Date of Sighting: July 2,2015
Time of Day: 10 pm
Nearest Town: Bentonsport
Length of Sighting: 15-30 minutes
How many Witnesses: myself and Tye
Any Photos/Videos: none
Describe sighting in detail:

It was around 10 pm, Tye and I saw what we thought was a coyote coming out of the brush across from us along the edge of the field and raised its head high as it watched us before going back in.

Then it reappeared in the lower part of the field and we thought it was a coyote by the way it was trotting. It kept coming towards us and didn't seem to have any fear of us. We hurried down along the edge of the field to have a closer look of it. We got at least a couple of hundred yards with our spotlights on it the whole way and we could see it was a very large canine. It sometimes raised its head high to look at us which was 3 or 4 times. It had pointed ears and was grayish tan. I'm guessing it stood at least 4 feet or so high at the head, Tye thought it stood on its hind legs but I think it just raised its head.

Almas
Almas -
Also Almasty and Albasty.
The Almas (Mongolian: Алмас/Almas, Bulgarian: Алмас, Chechen: Алмазы, Turkish: Albıs), Mongolian for "wild man", is a purported hominid cryptozoological species reputed to inhabit the Caucasus and Pamir Mountains of central Asia, and the Altai Mountains of southern Mongolia.

Other names by which these creatures are known, depending on the particular region, are 'Wind-Man', Abnuaaya, Bekk-Bok, Biabin-Guli, Gul-Biavan, Guli-Avan, Golub-Yavan, Kaptar, Kra-Dhan, Ksy-Giik or Ksy Gyik, Mirygdy, Mulen and Voita.

Almases are typically described as human-like bipedal animals, between five and six and a half feet tall, their bodies covered with reddish-brown hair, with anthropomorphic facial features including a pronounced browridge, flat nose, and a  receding chin. Many cryptozoologists believe there is a similarity between these descriptions and modern reconstructions of how Neanderthals might have appeared.

1420 - The first known printed reference on the Almas was made by a Bavarian named Hans Schiltberger. He traveled through the Tien Shan mountains as a captive to the Mongols. During his imprisonment he kept a journal in which he wrote:
"In the mountains themselves live a wild people, who have nothing in common with other human beings, a pelt covers the entire body of these creatures. Only the hands and face are free of hair. They run around in the hills like animals and eat foliage and grass and whatever else they can find. The Lord of the Territory made Egidi a present of a couple of forest people, a man and a woman, together with three untamed horses the sizes of asses and all sorts of other animals which are not found in German lands and which I cannot therefore put a name to."

1807-1867 - Sightings reported at Khalkha, the Galbin Gobi and Dzakh Soudjin Gobi as well as in Inner Mongolia; also at the Gourban Bogdin Gobi, Chardzyn Gobi and the Alachan desert.

In the mid 1800s  a wild woman who was named Zana is said to have lived in the isolated mountain village of T'khina fifty miles from Sukhumi in Abkhazia in the Caucasus; some have speculated she may have been an Almas. According to accounts, she was very physically powerful, able to perform feats of exceptional strength. Zana, at first was violent towards her captors but soon became domesticated and assisted with simple household chores. While in captivity, Zana was passed on through a succession of owners and mothered several hybrid children. According to the story, she had as many as 6 offspring, by different men, with a total of 4 surviving with the help of the local village women. According to reports the children were fairly normal, except for being dark and physically powerful. The 4 children were assimilated into normal society, married, and had families of their own  One of the male children, Khwit, remains namely the skull was examined by Dr. Grover Krantz in the early 1990s. He pronounced it to be entirely modern, with no Neanderthal features at all.  Zana, herself  died sometime in the 1890.

In the 2013 a documentary, Bigfoot Files, Professor Bryan Sykes of the University of Oxford showed that Zana's DNA was 100% Sub-Saharan African in origin and she could have been a slave brought to Abkhazia by the Ottoman Empire Prof. Sykes did however raise questions as to whether Zana could have been from a population of Africans who left the continent tens of thousands of years earlier as her son, Khwit's skull had some very unique and archaic characteristics.

There is much more to the tale of Zana and her offspring, I invite others to research and come to their own conclusions.

Myra Shackley and Bernard Heuvelmans have speculated that the Almases are a relict population of Neanderthals, while Loren Coleman suggests surviving specimens of Homo erectus. They have been connected to the Denisova hominin. Descriptions of Almases are similar to that of the Yeti of the Himalayas.

Name: Almas
Similar to: Bigfoot, Orang Pendek, Batutut,Yeti
Location: Central Asia
Movement: Bi-pedal
Size: 5-6 and half Feet tall
Photos/Videos: None

Most of this information comes from Wikipedia and there is very little I have added to the post. As for the photo used, I do not know who the original artist is or who to give credit to. There is much more tales of the Almas and sighting reports than I have included here.
Thanks

Batutut -
The Batutut or Ujit or Người rừng, sometimes also known as "forest people", is a proposed hominid cryptid, reputedly similar to the bigfoot, thought to inhabit the Vũ Quang  nature reserve and other wilderness areas of Vietnam, Laos and northern Borneo. The Vũ Quang has been the source of a number of newly discovered mammals by Dr. John MacKinnon. Mackinnon claims to have first observed tracks in 1970 that led him to believe that a hominid similar to the Meganthropus lives there. Mackinnon's 1975 book In Search Of The Red Ape describes his experiences and findings. A 1947 sighting by a French colonist refers to the animal as a L'Homme Sauvage (wild man). Vietnamese scholars refer to the animal as the Người Rừng ("forest man").

Batutut or Forest people
Map of  Vu Quang National Park

It is described as being approximately 1.8 m (6 ft) tall and covered with hair except in the knees, the soles of the feet, the hands, and the face. The hair ranges in color from gray to brown to black. The creature walks on two legs and has been reported both solitary and moving in small groups. The creature is most often sighted foraging for food from fruits and leaves to langers and even flying foxes.
In Borneo, witnesses describe it as four feet tall and very aggressive, occasionally killing humans and tearing out their livers.

Ccryptozoologist Loren Coleman believes that the Batutut are a surviving population of Homo erectus or Neanderthal and this could be possible. The Vũ Quang and wilderness of Vietnam is rather large and still somewhat unexplored.

Sightings -
In his book Very Crazy G.I. - Strange but True Stories of the Vietnam War, Kregg P. J. Jorgenson relates a sighting of such a creature by a team of US soldiers. The men referred to it as a "Rock Ape" reporting it as being small in stature, about 5 feet tall and having a reddish tinge to its fur.
Two Người Rừngs were reportedly captured by tribesmen near Dak Lak Province in 1971. In 1974 a North Vietnamese general, Hoang Minh Thao, requested an expedition to find evidence of the creatures, but it was unsuccessful.

In 1918 a hunter, Mr. Van Heerwarden found some odd human type tracks but never seen what or who made them. In 1923, Mr. Van Heerwarden found these human type tracks again and followed them. He followed the prints until he spotted a wild man in a tree: "I discovered a dark and hairy creature on a branch. ... The sedapa was also hairy on the front of its body; the colour there was a little lighter than on the back. The very dark hair on its head fell to just below the shoulder-blades or even almost to the waist....Had it been standing, its arms would have reached to a little above its knees; they were therefore long, but its legs seemed to me rather short. I did not see its feet, but I did see some toes which were shaped in a very normal manner. ... There was nothing repulsive or ugly about its face, nor was it at all apelike". The above quote is from Abominable Snowmen, by Ivan T. Sanderson. Abominable Snowmen is available on Kindle - get it now by Clicking Here!

More recently the now canceled TV show Destination Truth made a trip to look for Batutut. Josh Gates and his team went to Vietnam and found large human type footprints and also managed to filmed a possible Batutut with a thermal imager.
Here is a clip of it.

Gates and his team made a casting of the humanlike tracks and took them to be examined by noted Bigfoot researcher, anthropologist Jeff Meldrum.  Meldrum called the print "a significant discovery" and one of the best pieces of evidence he had seen.

With all the similarities to Bigfoot it is not surprising that the Batutut is sometimes called the Bigfoot of Vietnam but I find the Batutut to also be similar to the orang-pendek.

While putting together this post from various sources and adding in some of my own thoughts, I was surprised at some of the information I found. One thing I found rather interesting is that the overall size of reports of this creature falls well within the range of human sizes. I could not find any reports stating that the creature was over 6 foot tall or a hulking 10 foot beast. It makes me wonder if this is maybe just a scientifically undocumented monkey species of some sort. A little over one year ago a new spices of monkey was discovered in the Congo. The Lesula was the first new monkey species discovered in 28 years. It has a strikingly large, almost human like face with human type eyes and a pink face.
So could the Batutut be just another yet to be documented monkey species? possibly, then we can also question what is bigfoot? Monkey, Ape, lost man, hybrid or maybe we should just call most of them Primates at this point. It would seem more fitting.

Primates are grouped into monkeys, apes and hominids. Most monkey species have tails, but this is not true for apes or hominids, as they do not have tails, so until we can find out more about these creatures maybe Primate is a good name for now. If we consider the above primate information, we can deduce that Bigfoot would most likely fall within the apes or hominids area, which causes debates in the bigfoot community. I have never heard of any reports of bigfoot having a tail. Just remember this is a broad approach and each groups has groupings and characteristics that need to be considered. So in the end much more study and research will have to be done not only on the Batutut but our beloved Bigfoot.

Thanks
~Tom~

Legend of Big Muddy Monster
Big Muddy Monster
This image above is the original artist rendering of "Big Muddy Monster", but I took a little time to colorize the image to give it a little life. I do not know who the original artist was so I do not know who to credit.

The story of Big Muddy Monster is a pretty interesting one and it leads me to believe the sightings were of our big hairy friend, Bigfoot.

Mothman statue
Mothman Statue
The Mothman was seen in Point Pleasant, West Virginia between November 1966 and December 1967. It is reported that about 100 people seen this strange creature during this time frame.
The description of the creature varied some, but generally the creature was described as being 5-7 foot tall, man shaped, grey or brown, with wings and wider than a man. The strangest detail told about this creature was it's lack of a head, with witnesses stating that it's red glowing eyes set on it's upper chest area.  To me this would represent the lack of a neck with the head sitting down between the shoulders. The red glowing eyes were often described as being as big as bicycle reflectors.

Another odd detail, about this totally odd being,  is that witnesses told that the Mothman didn't flap it's large wings when taking off or while in flight. People reported seeing the Mothman ascent straight up in the air without any wing flapping, odd indeed for a winged creature.
There is at least 1 report of the Mothman pacing a car at approximately 100 mph! The terrified witnesses in the car escaped when Mothman broke off it's chase at the city limits.

Some people also reported hearing humming sounds coming from the Mothman and a few reported screams that sounded like a woman screaming.
Another odd thing about this is that some people reported radio and electronic interference. Stuff like lose of TV reception or YV's having static and that radios would not work correctly.

One thing is for sure, everyone who saw this creature was struck with terror. This terror might play a part in the concept that seeing the Mothman is a bad omen or of a pending disaster. This is also fueled by the collapse of  Sliver Bridge, which crossed the Ohio river to Point Pleasant. Witnesses claimed to have seen Mothman in the area before the bridge collapsed. The bridge collapsed on Dec. 15, 1967 during rush hour traffic killing 46 people, 2 of which were never found. The Silver Bridge was build in 1928 and named "Silver bridge" due to it's shiny aluminum paint.  After the collapse investigators determined that a small 2.5mm defect in one single eyebar in a suspension chain and being overloaded caused the collapse. The bridge was replace in 1969 and name Silver Memorial Bridge.

Another eerie part of this story is that the Mothman was said to have been hanging around the old World War II munition domes in Point Pleasant. There are over 100 of these old TNT domes in the area. Some thought Mothman chose that area due to the chemicals that are buried underground there.

Over the years there has been many movies and books about the Mothman. One of the most known movies is The Mothman Prophecies starring Richard Gere. Cryptozoologist Loren Colman wrote Mothman and Other Curious Encounters for which he received very high praise.

The Mothman sightings are not just contained to the United States. There has been several reports from other areas. In 1985 a similar type creature was reported just before the Mexico City earthquake and in 1986 a Mothman type of creature was reported just before the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant meltdown. There was also a reported sighting in 1963 in England and many others. There continues to be Mothman sightings even to this today.

So is the Mothman part of the terrible disasters or is it just some type of warning that we do not understand? No one really knows for sure and that part of the tale is open for debate.

So just what is Mothman?  Many speculate that it could be an alien, while others believe it to be some type of mutation due to the chemicals in the TNT domes.  Others think it could be some type of a death angel sent to warn people of impending doom or disaster. Still others think it's just a hoax.

If you have had a Mothman sighting feel free to contact us.

Thanks
~Tom~

William Evans

This is a post by TCC Team Member Dale Drinnon.
Dale has a degree in Anthropology with a background in Zoology and Paleontology.
Visit his Blog - Frontiers of Zoology

William Evans posted the photo he took from 2001 at the yahoo group Bigfoot Sightings anonymous. He allowed me to reprint the photo with the condition that I plainly indicated it was his photo and not to alter the image itself (in writing) I believe I have done appropriately in the presentation below, I did indicate to him that I would indicate points of interest in the third photo.

The first photo (below) is the full original photo. William points out there is a figure hidden at the left as well as the more obvious face at the open area at the right.

First Photo

The second photo is the face in the open area blown up to a larger size.

Second Photo

And the third photo is the exact same as number two save only for the fact that I have pointed out facial anatomical features of the face as they seem readily apparent to me.

Third Photo

It is my opinion that we have a very good example of the more apelike type of North American "Bigfoot", the same as the photographed Myakka ape or otherwise the Florida Skunk Ape.
Every individual feature of the face is a very good match for a young (juvenile) orangutan: the resemblance is less strong for a chimpanzee or a gorilla, for example.
I would conclude that this is evidence that we have a free-ranging population of a kind of North American great ape or what Loren Coleman calls a NAPE, and that we have good confirmatory evidence that it is very much like an orangutan.
Whether or not it is the exact same species as our "Known" orangutans is yet to be determined, but I DO think that they should be the same as the East-Asiatic creature known variously as Yeti, Yeren, Hibagon, Mawas and Xing-Xing. The last two terms are generally understood to mean "Orangutan".

Thanks
Dale

[Special thanks to William Evans for use of the photo]
