The Hawkesbury River Monster

Mysterious water monsters are not unusual. The Loch Ness Monster and Lake Champlain’s Champ are just two creatures belonging to this fascinating class of cryptid. However, New South Wales, Australia has its own resident water creature, known as the Hawkesbury River Monster.

We all know that Florida is home to a large diversity of animals, but is it home to lake monsters?
I recently got a report in, which is an older sighting, of what the witness describes as a lake monster. So, I got to looking at possible lake monsters in Florida and there is a few of them. You have the Lake Clinch monster, that some say is 30 foot long and has a humped back. Then there is Muck monster that has been seen in Lake Worth Lagoon. Plus there is St. Augustine monster and a few others as well. Florida has numerous lakes, lagoons, rivers and streams that some say are all interconnected thanks to underground tunnels. So there is a history of sightings in the state.

Here is the recent report that I received.

- Start Report -

Name: Mark

Email Address: On file

State: Florida

County:
Saint Johns

Date of Sighting:
1978 or 1979

Time of Day: 11 am

Nearest Town: ? North part of the bay

Length of Sighting:
15 seconds

How many Witnesses: Just me

Any Photos/Videos: No

Describe sighting in detail:

A friend and I took his father's boat out to drink beer and water ski. He was driving, I was in the back looking back. We were fairly close to some shoreline to the east moving at near top speed. I was looking at the shoreline and within I would say 50 feet I saw a serpent with two humps swimming north.

It was, I would guess, 20 to 25 feet long and 1+ foot diameter. The thing that was very identifiable was the color. It was dark brown with mustard yellow spots that were pretty big. I watched it as we went south and it went north, at first it was like wtf, then I closed my eyes and opened them again and of course it was still there.

It all happened so fast that I was afraid if I told my friend that by the time he heard me and turned around to look (he was being very careful concentrating on driving so close to the shore) it would be gone. So I just kept my mouth shut and hadn't told anyone until years later. I'm just relating this now because I was doing some research on other sightings to see if any matched up. I saw your sight and am reporting this to someone who may find the data interesting. Sorry I don't have a lot of facts like date/year, exact location or image but I tell you it's true.

- End Report -

Thanks goes to Mark for the report. In my limited research of lake monsters in Florida, it seem there was a lot of reported sightings in the late 70's. So, Mark's sighting seems to fall right in a peak time with other sightings. It should be noted that Mark was from another state and had drove into Florida for a visit, and that is probably why he was unfamiliar with names and exact locations.

Thanks
~Tom~

Is This Champ? The Legendary “Monster” of Lake Champlain?
By Dorraine Fisher

Lake Champlain is a 125 mile (201 km) long strip of freshwater lake located between New York State and Vermont, extending all the way up into Quebec, Canada. It is named for Samuel De Champlain, the founder of Quebec. But the most intriguing thing about it is the legend of Champ, the monster that’s believed to live in the lake.

Many believe the creature could possibly be a relic plesiousaur, a dinosaur believed to have become extinct during the early part of the Jurassic period, but somehow managed to survive after the lake dried up somewhat and was cut off from the larger body of salt water which included the Atlantic Ocean.

Many people in the area believe the stories are just legend with no real basis except to boost tourism around the lake. But since Champlain’s time, there have been hundreds of supposed sightings.
One of the most notable scientists searching for evidence of Champ’s existence is Scott Mardis who has graciously allowed me to share this with our followers. According to Mardis, a man named Eric Olson was out taking his morning walk in Oakledge Park near Burlington, Vermont , when he captured this video on his cell phone.
Let us know what you think.

Is This Champ, The Monster Of Lake Champlain?
By Dorraine Fisher

Lake Champlain is a 125 mile (201 km) long strip of freshwater lake located between New York State and Vermont, extending all the way up into Quebec, Canada. It is named for Samuel De Champlain, the founder of Quebec. It’s a beautiful area, but the most interesting thing about it is the legend of Champ, the monster that’s believed to live in the lake.

And Champlain was the first recorded European who claimed to have seen the creature. He described it as “20-foot serpent thick as a barrel, and a head like a horse." Many believe the creature could possibly be a relic plesiousaur, a dinosaur believed to have become extinct during the early part of the Jurassic period, but somehow managed to survive after the lake dried up somewhat and was cut off from the larger body of salt water which included the Atlantic Ocean.

Many people in the area believe the stories are just legend with no real basis except to boost tourism around the lake. But since Champlain’s time, there have been hundreds of sightings, but very little concrete evidence.

But that may have changed when two fisherman in the area claimed to have spotted the creature and caught it on video.

Watch this footage carefully and tell us what you think.

monsters of the deep
Is this Nessie?
Monsters of the deep have long struck fear into many people. The darkest and depth of rivers, lakes and oceans are a  source of many movie plots, but the truth of it all is that there has always been a history of odd creatures and stories from our waterways.
Recently James Cameron took his sub deeper than man has ever gone in the ocean. He was almost 7 miles deep.
Sightings of Nessie are still happening, strange creatures have been discovered and filmed in the ocean and stories go back hundreds of years.
