So, this picture has a few stories that surround it. In some places it is know as the "Scariest Picture on The Internet". In other places it is translated to "the most horrible picture in the world". In either case, there are mysterious stories and even deaths associated with this picture.
Today, I will attempt to explore some of the stories, legends and hopefully some truths about this picture.
So, lets dig in.
Okay, so the most common story about this picture is that a young girl living in Japan drew the picture of herself, scanned it and uploaded it to the internet and then killed herself. This of course caused her to haunt the picture.
This version of the tale really caught on and is probably the most popular. But there is a little more that goes along with all versions of the story. They say that if you stare into the eyes of the picture for around 5 minutes you will see the face change. Some of the changes reported in the picture are things like, a taunting smirk will appear on the girls lips or a dark ring grows around the girl or her eyes. The other odd thing about this is that there are reports, that I can not verify, of people taking their own lives after starring into the eyes of the image for more than 5 minutes.
Now, as I was digging for more information about this image I ran across some other versions of the tale that seems to contain more details.
First, the girl in the picture is known as Sonee or Princess Ruu. The main alternative story goes something like this.
In Japan, a young woman found out her husband was having an affair. She drew a picture of herself and committed suicide. My guess is that she felt humiliated. The cheating husband was shocked at his wife killing herself. He found the picture and realized how beautiful his now dead wife was, and jumped to his own death. According to some version, this took place around 1956.
Now, here is where the story takes a slight turn. The picture was left at the house this couple owned. The house was eventually sold. The new owner of the house kept the painting. They probably didn't know the story behind it. Later the owner of the home, lost his mind and died as a madman. According to this version of the story, there has been seven people who have lived in the house and they have all died from odd circumstances. For example, one person reportedly cut his face on the bed, while sleeping, and bleed to death.
And of course, the same legend of staring into the eyes for 5 minutes is attached to this version of the story.
Now, as I dug even more I found out the true origin of the picture. The picture is a CGI drawing by Robert Chang. The girl in the picture is said to be the main character from a sci-fi/fantasy screenplay titled "Tellurian Sky". Mr. Chang has even addressed the issue about the picture saying:
"Over the years, I've been getting tons of emails from people telling me that my painting was used as some ridiculous urban myth about some girl who painted this image before committing suicide, and if you stare at the image long enough her ghost will appear. Really? Seriously? Are people really that gullible? I've seen many of these discussions online, and it's just hilarious."
If you would like to view the source of the statement by Mr. Chang, you may do so by Clicking Here

I was also able to view more of Mr. Chang's work on another one of his website, found Here. He is a very talented artist and teaches some classes on becoming an artist.
Now, with all of this information, there is still the question of how did the legend start and how do you explain the morbid tales associated with the picture. My guess is that the suicide tale was started just for a scary story. Then the power of suggestion kicked in and it took on a life of its own.
But I will admit, the image created by Mr. Chang is very haunting, beautiful, but haunting.
We wish Mr. Chang good luck with his endeavors and thank him for the awesome artwork.
Thanks
~Tom~
