It was Abraham Lincoln of course.
The first families have joked about it for years. Many guests of the Lincoln bedroom, including Winston Churchill, First Lady Grace Coolidge, and Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands claimed to have seen him. But paranormal researcher, Joshua P. Warren claims to have photographic proof.
This photo taken by a former White House photographer was said to have been taken in the basement below the Lincoln bedroom, leading Warren to believe that Lincoln is the one in the photo, though Presidents Fillmore and Polk also died while in office.
The photo depicts a strange, transparent figure standing in the foreground of a work site.
Oddly, the photo wasn’t even noticed until 2008 when it appeared in David McCullough’s Pulitzer Prize-winning biography about Harry Truman called “Truman.”
Warren disagreed when other photographers who claimed the photo was probably the result of long exposure of the film. He claimed another photo, the one below had no such technical problem. He said as the man is walking down the mound of dirt in the frame, the shutter could have only been open one or two seconds.
But many other photographers had made the same claim that the photo, like many other photos of its time done in long exposure that often depict ghostly figures is just one more of the same. But Warren has stuck to his story claiming that the men on the other side of the photo were shorter than the transparent figure. As Lincoln was about 6 feet four inches tall, he claims this is more evidence that the ghostly figure must be Lincoln.
We’ll probably never know the truth, but the odds are on a long exposure error. Though it’s more fun to think it really is Lincoln, the most famous ghost of the White House.
