Police are called after an apparent Bigfoot tried to break into the house of a 78 year old woman. The woman became so frightened that she fled the house out of total fear. The Bigfoot damaged not only the house but also the smokehouse that was on the property.

Once police were on the scene they found the storm door of the house damaged alone with the wooden frame. The wooden frame was splintered.

But this was only the start of the investigation for the officer, things were about to get much worse.

Here is how this strange night got started and the numerous sighting that came after.

After receiving several reports of Bigfoot sightings on the Lummi Indian Reservation, Lummi Police Sgt. Ken Cooper was called to the residence of 78-year-old Emma Smith.

She reported a Bigfoot attempting to break into her home, and she had fled in terror. Sgt. Cooper found the plastic on a storm door torn and the door's wooden frame splintered. Boards has also been torn from a nearby smokehouse, but he could not find the creature, nor any person.

Sgt. Cooper returned to the residence around 2:30 a.m., shining the spotlight from his patrol car into the woods. He found a group of seven people already there, with their own spotlights set directly on a huge seven-and-a-half foot tall "hair creature", aka a Bigfoot.

Sgt. Cooper aimed his 12-gauge shotgun at the creature. Concerned that it could be a human in a costume, he yelled, "If there's somebody just fooling around you better knock it off because we have weapons." The creature just crouched down. As Sgt. Cooper stepped forward, the creature lowered himself even further until only his head was showing above the brush.

For 20 minutes, Sgt. Cooper and the other people stared down the crouching "hairy creature" until they heard noises in the brush to their right, and people said they were seeing more Bigfoot there.

At that point, Cooper decided it was time to leave the scene.

He returned to the location after dawn and found bare footprints in the frost-covered ground. He measured the footprints. They were 18 inches long and 7 inches wide.

Over the coming weeks, the Lummi Tribal Police received over 100 reports of sightings of Bigfoot creatures. Sgt. Cooper himself saw Bigfoot two more times shortly after the first encounter.

This very much appears to be a real encounter/event. The damage, the multiple witnesses, and one of which is a police officer. The even happened on October 23, 1975. It is yet another great example of a credible event with police that is, for the most part, over looked or forgotten.

Here is a very brief overview of other reports from this area around this same time frame.

November 12, 1975 - Over 100 reports of Bigfoot sightings on the Reservation. Sgt. Cooper again investigates these reports. The sightings outbreak dated back to early October. The Bigfoot were blamed for the deaths of 3 dogs and a wound on a horse's neck. Even though many people were chasing the Sasquatch with guns the Lummi tribal council voted to outlaw shooting the creature.  - Vancouver Sun Times.

Now, I want to give you some information about the location of this event and the people.

First here is the location on a map. As you can see this is very close to the border and in prime Bigfoot country.

Now a little about the people and the Nation.

The Lummi, are governed by the Lummi Nation, they are a Native American tribe of the Coast Salish ethnolinguistic group in western Washington state in the United States. The federally recognized tribe primarily resides on and around the Lummi Indian Reservation to the west of Bellingham in western Whatcom County, 20 miles south of the border with Canada.

Lummi Nation is a nationally recognized leader in tribal self-governance and education. They are a Self-Governing Nation within the United States, the third largest tribe in Washington State, having over 5,000 members. They manage nearly 13,000 acres of tidelands on the Lummi Reservation. The Lummi People. Were the original inhabitants of Washington's northernmost coast and southern British Columbia.

I'm glad to share these vintage reports, I sure hope people are enjoying and getting something out of them.

Thanks
Tom

  2. Fascinating- too bad cell phones didn't exist! How have things changed in that area since? have there been any more sightings, or does it seem as if the Bigfoots have moved on?
