Faking It with a Gorilla Suit

There is a lot of talk in the community about faking videos of bigfoot by renting or buying a gorilla or monkey suit and parading around in front of a camera. Well, let's see what someone who tried such a stunt has to say about it.

To set the scene, The Memorial Day Footage was filmed back in May 1996 by the Pate family in the Paysaten Wilderness area, Washington state. A track star was brought in to run the route that the alleged bigfoot traveled. The track star was found to be both larger and faster than the creature in the original video. Many declared the film a hoax.
Of course, it had to be a hoax because a bigfoot could never, ever be shorter than a full-grown adult human.  No matter how young or old or male or female, a bigfoot could never run slower than a human, not even if the bigfoot was carrying a baby on its back.  (Yep, a little sarcasm. Sorry.)

And for the record, it is said that the track star messed up his first attempt at trying to run the same path as the alleged bigfoot. And, come to think of it, in none of his attempts was he wearing a gorilla suit -- as declared by some of those calling the video a hoax. The usual, "wearing a suit!".

Wearing a suit. Running an uneven hillside, without falling while wearing a cumbersome suit.

And so we come to Larry Spiry, connected to Oregonbigfoot.com.  While filming some filler footage for a film he was working on, he decided to try wearing a typical gorilla suit that would be available to amateur videographers.

First, he found that not everyone fits into such a suit easily. On his crew, he was the only one who could. The suit was so baggy that pillows were strapped to the front and back to fill the suit out. And he soon found out, despite it being night and being rather cold out, that he began to overheat almost immediately.

And then there were the gorilla foot slippers made of rubber. It was extremely difficult to walk without tripping almost every step.

And when the head went on, the eye holes were impossible to see out of. And he could not breathe. So, while overheating, hyperventilating, and walking into trees, he tried to walk the 15 to 20 feet they wanted for the film.  He flopped around in the rubber gorilla feet just trying to walk like a bigfoot. And then they discovered the rubber chest of the suit was reflecting light and they had to change the camera angle to hide that fact.

Bigfoot Suit

All of this makes it hard for me to believe that people go out and rent or buy a gorilla or monkey suit to use in filming a hoax. It would end up being too frustrating to even get something on film that could be used.

Are all the films real? Of course not. But neither are they all fake. This is just another thing to keep in mind when deciding if the video is real or fake.

As for Hollywood quality professionally made suits or ghillie suits --   well, different suits, different circumstances, different budgets, different conclusions to be reached, of course.
