Antelope Mountains Hairy Man
In 1879, while out duck hunting, William Shegan and his friend Mr. Gore flushed out more than just flying targets.
As evening approached, the two men, returning to the ranch, took a shortcut across the mountain. The trail they were on was a rough one that went through the wildest part in the Antelope range of the mountains.
They were carefully working their way along the edge of a chasm when they heard an "animalistic noise" back towards a cliff. Looking in that direction, they saw a "large, hairy man-like animal". Suddenly it began running with "the speed of the wind". Thinking it was an animal, Mr. Gore shot at it, wounding the creature in the arm.
With a scream of pain, the creature stopped, grabbed its arm and turned back towards the hunters and began to charge toward them. With both guns empty, the two dropped them and everything else and ran for their lives, afraid to test their physical strength against the creature.
They ran until they could go no further, thinking they had outrun the creature. (My opinion? As soon as they dropped their guns and started running, it stopped following them. They had been routed and were no longer a threat.)
When the men told their story, they insisted that the creature resembled a man in general appearance, but was wild-eyed and very fierce in its disposition although they only saw it for a short time.
Some tried to explain the creature as being a young man, a "lunatic", who had escaped from his keepers in California and made it to the mountains where he continued to avoid recapture. He was living in the mountains, eating small wild animals he killed with his hands and surviving by whatever means he could.
There were additional encounters with the strange creature, described by others as "much different to a person who had simply descended into a wild lifestyle in the forests". The arms were described as being "long and hairy"; and that it resembled a full-grown gorilla. It would run swiftly, uttering strange loud cries and screams.
The creature was never identified or caught.
