NASA broadcast live today, announcing the discovery of 7 Earth-like planets orbiting a star called TRAPPIST-1.
NASA believes three of the planets are in the habitable zone, which means it potentially has liquid water on the surface and the planet is not too hot or too cold to sustain life.
“This is very promising for the search for life outside our solar system,” said Michael Gillon, astronomer at the University of Liege in Belgium, during the press conference.
You can watch the conference below, it is about 50 minutes long and covers a lot of information.
I'm glad that some of this is finally being presented to the general public. I'm sure there is a lot of information that is not shared with the general population.
This was covered by multiple news networks but the main live conference was live on facebook. Here is a link to NASA's facebook page - Facebook.com/NASA/
It will be interesting to learn more about these new planets and it was great to hear NASA talk about life on other planets and that they may be watching us.
Here is a little more information on TRAPPIST 1:
TRAPPIST-1, also known as 2MASS J23062928-0502285, is an ultracool dwarf star located 39 light-years (12 parsecs) away in the constellation Aquarius.A team of astronomers headed by Michaël Gillon of the Institut d’Astrophysique et Géophysique at the University of Liège in Belgium used the TRAPPIST (Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope) telescope at the La Silla Observatory in the Atacama desert, Chile, to observe the star and search for orbiting planets.
Is full disclosure coming soon?
Thanks
