The Freeman Footage

Paul Freeman was a forestry worker who had experiences with a mysterious creature who left tracks in the woods. Although co-workers teased him over his discoveries, he continued to learn all he could on the subject and became one of the best trackers and casters in the business.

This man did much as a field researcher before the film he took. He discovered the Mill Hill Tracks which were studied by several experts. Jeff Meldrum was at first skeptical but when he was able to study the casts and see the details, he declared them a critical piece of evidence. Grover Krantz considered them real, as did expert Jimmy Chilcutt. These casts showed scars and dermal ridges. Dr. Meldrum, studying the same foot casts, concluded that the different prints show toes tightly flexed in one cast and then extended and splayed in another. In one print, the first 3 toes are sunken into the soil, with the 4th and 5th barely leaving a mark.
In 1986, Freeman also found and cast a handprint from an alleged bigfoot that had been crouching down to drink.

While some supported Freeman, others were critical of his work. One of their problems was his ability to find evidence of bigfoot activity. Grover Krantz trained Freeman on how to properly cast and measure trackways. Freeman had a keen sense of animal tracking and Krantz saw Freeman as the most experienced and competent field man in the Walla Walla, Washington area.

He spent many hours out in the woods, sometimes three days out of the week. In addition to his own evidence discoveries, he collected stories of experiences from others who lived in the area.

Some say his limited income and straightened circumstances would have made hoaxing difficult for him. He could not have managed the costume needed to reach the levels of a convincing hoax.

Freeman encountered an 8-foot-tall bigfoot near Walla Walla, Washington on June 10, 1982. The creature was a reddish-brown color and was covered from head to toe in hair. This prompted him to purchase and begin to carry a recorder with him everywhere in the woods.

In 1994 in the Blue Mountains region, Paul Freeman filmed a bigfoot. The footage was included in the documentary "Sasquatch Legend Meets Science". The film footage is more believable and makes more sense if viewed in its raw footage, rather than the shorter more commonly viewed segment.

Freeman had noticed tracks and other signs of a bigfoot being in the area. With a camera in hand, he was ready to film. The raw footage shows him documenting the tracks he was following, and then coming upon the bigfoot itself. This footage shows the work of a well trained competent field man.

The footage was analyzed by Dr. Esteban Sarmiento, a functional anatomist at the American Museum of Natural History. He made note of the size of the creature and that the movement was slow, indicating a large animal. However, he would not commit to if it were a real animal or a man in a suit.

There are several moments in the film that people find interesting. At one point the bigfoot steps behind a tree and then is not seen again until you see him step out from the next tree. The problem is the gap between the trees, in which you do not see the bigfoot cross it. Some say it crouches down and moves to the second tree. Others say there is a paranormal reason for it. He "camouflages" or "disappears" for a moment.

Then the creature gives a quick look towards Freeman as he is filming. It's a quick movement that gives the costume theory a severe jolt. That sudden of a movement of a head while wearing a costume usually results in an independent movement of the mask. It seems to prove that the creature is not wearing a mask.

Another consideration is that the quick movement is very unlike the movements displayed by the bigfoot in the Patterson Film. So, why would a hoaxer not try to duplicate the same torso turn for their film? Why use a movement contrary to what people would believe and accept?

The creature is also said to have a pot belly. This might indicate that it could be either a pregnant female or a "fat" bigfoot. Why would a hoaxer commit this type of fakery?

A few seconds later the bigfoot steps behind a tree and stops. It becomes completely concealed, and camouflaged until it finally moves again.

Freeman takes the camera off the creature while trying to find safe footing. He is unable to find the bigfoot again. It is either hiding behind a tree or bush, or it has "disappeared".

Others viewing this say that when the bigfoot walks away, it bends down and picks something up before being lost to view. They claim this may be a juvenile bigfoot.

Paul Freeman seemed to be an honest man when it came down to it. In October 1987 while being filmed for a Good Morning America Bigfoot segment, he admitted that prior to the Mill Hill Tracks discovery, some of the footprints that he had found may have been faked by some other third party. If he would put his reputation on the line with this "confession", it stands to reason that as his health grew worse, he would have "confessed" any other counterfeits. He stood by his film until his death.

UPDATE: 2021 The Paul Freeman footage was shared on the television program "Paranormal: caught on camera." That footage was declared the number one video that was shared to the show. NUMBER ONE. Out of 200 videos.
