Burning sage is commonly called smudging and it can be used for a variety of purposes depending on the type being used. Smudging is generally used as a spiritual cleansing with smoke using special sacred herbs.
You can smudge a person, a place, a building or an object. Smudging is a process that has been practiced for thousands of years in some form or another, by cultures all around the world.
Smudging is normally used to remove a negative energy and bring a feeling of peace and clarity. Have you ever been in a house and something just doesn't feel right? Or something just feels off about a location. Smudging the area will often remedy that "off" feeling.
There may be some confusion on what type of sage to use, so below is a short guild to help you.
The type of sage is listed on the left and what it is commonly used for on the right. Please note that some sage may have a slightly different name depending on where you purchase it. This is also only a partial list of the available types of sage sticks.
Smudge sticks are a bunch of herbs which are tightly bound with twine. The herbs used to make a smudge stick are chosen for their particular properties and qualities, which are thought to benefit the user in some way.
This post in no way is a comprehensive guild and I'll be the first to admit I have very limited knowledge and use of sage. But we can learn together and I can give some basic information.
Some may have questions on when or how often to use sage so here are some thoughts about it.
Many use smudging when they move into a new home or an apartment to kind of give it a fresh start. Another use may be if something bad has happened recently in your home. An example would be if your house got broken into, or there was some kind of violence that took place.
Some people even use smudging to mark important positive changes in their lives. Maybe you stopped a bad habit and you want to mark the change.
Some people do smudging on some kind of regular routine, much like you may do spring cleaning or monthly chore. In the end, it is totally up to the individual just how often and what type sage they use and for what purpose. There are many techniques to using sage, so find a method you are comfortable with.
If you decide to try smudging please be safe with it and do some more research on just what type of sage you need. Never leave your burning sage alone or near flammable objects. Always use smudging in a well ventilated area and use a heat resistant smudge bowl or something similar.
As I stated, this is not a detailed post and is just a general overview of sage and smudging, please do your own research if you are considering using sage.
Thanks
~Thomas~
