What started out and seemed like a routine police chase by the Garden City Police Department turned into a leaked dash cam video that continues to baffle many even today.
The original dashcam video was shot around 1999 or 2000 and was later leaked online on YouTube. The clip has appeared on various paranormal shows over the years and on countless websites. Some of these incorrectly state the dash cam video was shot in Garden City New York when it was actually filmed in Georgia.
We have put together a short video, using the police dashcam video, to fill you in on some of the details. Check out the video and look for more information below it.
Here is the video
According to Tim McMillan, a Lieutenant at the Garden City Police Department, the video is not fake, nor is the video altered in any way shape or form. But it is also not a ghost car either. Mr. McMillan also stated "The video itself was taken without authorization by a former employee
and was posted on YouTube. Because police videos are open under open
records laws, we have never made any attempt to have the video removed
from any media formats, but the video was at no time publicly released
by the Garden City Police Department."
According to McMillan, the TV show Fact or Faked got it right and stated that indeed the car when under the fence."The officer chose not to pursue the vehicle underneath the fence, for two
main reasons: not to damage his vehicle, and the offender had fled into
an enclosed trucking yard. The Officer instead of going under the fence went into a designated entrance and later found the “ghost car” in the
trucking yard abandoned. The offender would later be arrested, and he
was running to avoid being charged with DUI. The fence is no longer up,
but the area that the offender fled under the fence is around 4769 Old
Louisville Road, Garden City, Ga."
Here is the Google map image of the area
So, maybe the mystery has been solved? And for those who might question if Tim McMillan really works or worked for the police department, I did a Google search and I think I found him. It also appears to be true that he did work for the Garden City Police dept.
Of course, I didn't take the time to search old police records to see if the arrest was made and I have no way to validate the story told by Mr. McMillan.
The reports of Ghost Cars are something many of us have heard. Many towns and rural areas have similar tales. This clip and story made me think of a local ghost car story we have in my area. How the car would chase you along an old stretch of road and then seemly disappear. Maybe I will tell that story in detail someday.
