3 Of Ho Chi Minh City’s Most Uniquely Haunted Buildings

A whopping 15.5 million international tourists visited Vietnam in 2018. While many were traditional sightseers, a number of people booked a flight to see some of the many haunted sites located across the country. From ghosts to unexplained happenings and urban legends, there is no shortage of the supernatural throughout the nation. There are a few notable haunted buildings in Ho Chi Minh City in particular that have especially unique and mysterious backgrounds.

A different kind of museum

If you haven’t been to Vietnam before, one of the best (and most popular) ways to travel is by motorbike, and with many adventure style bikes that are perfect for beginners (like Suzuki’s DR Z400), you can easily take part in a motorbike tour. Haunted motorbike tours are a great way to see the country’s many haunted locations - and even more so if they stop at a haunted museum. While many may consider a museum visit a normal part of any trip, the Museum of Fine Arts in Ho Chi Minh City holds a peculiar history that would appeal to anyone interested in the supernatural. The museum, previously a mansion owned by a wealthy Chinese-Vietnamese businessman called Hua BonHoa, is well-known for the mysterious circumstances surrounding his only daughter’s death.

Hua, who had many sons, was said to treasure his only daughter, and it’s rumored that he even had the mansion built as a gift to her. Sadly, Hua’s daughter was diagnosed with tuberculosis, and it’s said that she took her own life before the disease killed her. After her death, it’s said that Hua couldn’t bear to bury his daughter, and instead kept her in a stone coffin in her room at the mansion, making it her mausoleum - after which there were several reports of apparitions of the girl in a white dress - making it a haunted museum with quite a history.

Thuan Kieu Plaza

Thuan Kieu Plaza, located in Ho Chi Minh City’s Chinatown, was once well-known for being one of the largest shopping malls and apartment complexes in the area. However, it was abandoned for around 20 years, due to many rumors of hauntings and unexplained happenings. For instance, rumor has it that there was a supposed disagreement between construction workers and investors, which is said to have resulted in a curse being put on the buildings.

Residents reported strange unexplained cases of sleep paralysis, and several reports of taxis being called when no-one was at the pickup location also happened. Business declined and residents disappeared, supposedly due to the haunted happenings. The complex reopened in 2017, totally renovated and renamed Garden Mall. While there hasn’t been an incident since, the eerie history makes this destination a modern, yet still creepy place to visit.

A Vietnamese haunted house

A supernatural itinerary wouldn’t be complete without a haunted house, and Vietnam is home to many. One of the most notable, however, is a house located on 24 Ly Thai To street in Ho Chi Minh City. In 2001, the house endured a fire that tragically killed a family of seven in its wake. The owner of the house, his wife, and one of their sons survived the fire, but the fire department determined that the cause of it was due to the surviving son (who had a mental illness). Despite the owners surviving, the house was still left abandoned for some time due to the rumored spirits that are said to have lingered there - namely one of a pregnant woman who perished in the fire with her child.

For those who are drawn to the supernatural, there are many haunted locations perfect for your travel itinerary - especially when it comes to some uniquely haunted buildings. From museums to houses, there are several haunted attractions that come along with their own story, and are definitely worth looking into.
