Back the 70's Williams International created the Wasp X Jet. It was given the nickname "The Flying Pulpit". It was a small, single-person, light-weight, Vertical Take Off and Landing aircraft. It could move in any direction, accelerate rapidly, hover and rotate on its axis, stay aloft for up to 45 minutes and travel at speeds up to 60 miles per hour.
The Wasp X was evaluated by the United States army in the 1980's but it was deemed inferior to the capabilities of helicopters and small, unmanned aircraft. Supposedly, development of the Wasp X Jet was discontinued but it appears the core idea lived on. Just as many expected.
Here is an old video of the Wasp X - Very impressive for the time frame.
Recently at France's Bastille Day parade a similar technology was shown off when a "flying soldier" came zipping in at a whopping 118 mph. The Soldier, Franky Zapata, brandished an unloaded rifle as a he raced at high speed above world leaders. Zapata was not only riding the Flyboard, he is also the inventor. He is hoping to sell the machine to the French military.
Here is a video of the Flyboard
This appears to be very similar to the Wasp X jet but of course with the Wasp X being almost 50 years old, this newer iteration appears to be much more advanced.
We were always shown that we would have flying cars in the year 2000 but here we are in 2019 and still no flying cars. But could something similar to the Flyboard be offered to the general public? I really doubt this type of technology would be offered to the average Joe. Maybe we can get it in a hoverboard version like in the film Back to the Future.
You also have to think, that we had something like the Wasp X jet 50 years ago. It got buried and hid from the general public. It makes you wonder just what other technology the world governments have that we know nothing about. I'm guessing there are a lot of things we don't know about.
Next question
If it was available to the common person ..would you purchase a "Flyboard"?
