Recently a friend of mine, who I will only call Don, had a very interesting UFO sighting in Wytheville, VA. Wytheville is a town in, and the county seat of, Wythe County, in western Virginia, United States. It is named after George Wythe, a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence, and mentor to Thomas Jefferson. Wytheville's population was 8,211 at the 2010 census.

I exchanged texts back and forth with Don to get his report. Here is his sighting in his own words, along with some questions I ask.

DON:

"I stayed the night (Sunday night 5/12/19) in Wytheville, VA and was on the top floor of the motel facing some really awesome looking mountains about 1/2 mile away. I toss and turn a lot during the night and wake up momentarily and then go right back to sleep and I have for many years now.  I also slept with the huge double window blind open so I could watch and enjoy the mountain view while going to sleep. (Note: no one could see me in that window from the highest floor of the motel or I wouldn't have had those blinds open).

I woke up about 1:30 am Monday morning and turned over in the bed facing the windows and about 3/4 miles away at the top of the mountain I saw these 5 lights, rectangular in shape, all in a straight line. The lights looked like they were on the side of a flat, domed shaped object. I thought "oh well, there must be some huge arena, or building up there but I wonder why its so lit up this early in the morning? (I know that sounds silly, but remember its early morning and I am momentarily awake as I simply turn over. I was NOT asleep)

Next morning I look and see nothing, no structure, but I still don't think anything about it. I go 4 hours away and get my grandson and we return to the same motel to spend Monday night there in the same room.

I tell my grandson what I saw and that we would look that night and figure out what it is up on that mountain....... We watched till almost 11:00 PM......Nothing. ???? 
During the night as usual, I awakened and turned over 2 or 3 more times and every time I looked to the mountain to see if the Lighted object was there........nothing.

Then Tuesday morning my son takes out his binoculars because of course he has just completed basic training and AIT, so he has some military equipment in his duffel bag. He says that the very spot I said I saw the lights is where some power-lines run over the mountain top.  Sure enough, looking through the binoculars there are those huge tall Power-line poles running over the mountain.

Now here is a rough drawing of what I saw. Remember I am not an artist. Just like that. The Lights were plain to see, the outline of the outer oval shape was very faint but it is what I could make out when I focused in on it, but this was only for a few short seconds.  I do not know why it didn't hit me or register with me what I was seeing, other than I was tired, and thinking it must be an "Arena" up there that I had not seen before going to bed. I think its odd that I keep thinking of an "Arena" when describing it because that is exactly what it looked like in shape.

The bottom was very close to the ground, I would say almost at tree top level

Power line tower example

I used Google Earth and Google maps and scanned the area at the power line cut and over the mountain. There is nothing else even for a mile or so beyond it that could have been lights I could see. Also in the picture of the power line cut you will notice it goes over a shorter part of the mountain in the foreground which does have a house to the Right of it and a little higher up, BUT then it goes up again higher over the very top of the mountain...... it is at that higher level where I saw the Lights and faint outline of the shape.

I am terrible with judging distances and sizes but as me and my grandson talked while standing at the window the day we were checking out of the motel, we agreed that for it to span the power line cut opening and also to reach out on both sides of the cut, maybe it was 300 to 400 feet?  Again, I am terrible with judging lengths especially at that distance. I can tell you it was a lot Wider than it was Tall.

Why Why Why didn't I get up and walk to the window??? I will never know.  Seeing a UFO was not in my mind, and I actually thought it was a structure up on the mountain that I simply had not noticed that evening before it got dark. The next morning as I stood at the window to see what the structure was then I realized there was nothing there."

TOM: What color were the lights?


DON:
"Bright brilliant white.  I remember thinking... "Man they sure have that place lit up well"
The Lights were rectangular in shape, not square.  more Wide than tall."

TOM: What do you think it was doing?

DON:
"Not sure. It was my grandson who noticed the huge Power line going over the mountain in that spot and we associated the power lines with what I saw. "

TOM: Maybe it was using power from the power line to re-charge something?

DON:  
Maybe, It was not moving in the slightest but then again I only looked at it for maybe 4 or 5 seconds before going back off to sleep. I have a very odd sleeping pattern, always have.

That's my story. I saw it, I have no doubt.  Oh how I wish I had gotten up and went to the window and watched till something happened.....   I can tell you it was huge, I'm guessing it was 200 feet across after scanning the area closely through the binoculars.
