Area where creature was seen. (photo provided by Corey and Tye)
Over the weekend, I got in this report of a possible sighting of a Shunka Warakin. For those who may not know, the Shunka Warakin is a wolf/hyena type creature mostly reported out west.

Here is the report.

- Start Report -

Name: Corey ******
Email Address: On file
State: Iowa
County: Van Buren
Date of Sighting: July 2,2015
Time of Day: 10 pm
Nearest Town: Bentonsport
Length of Sighting: 15-30 minutes
How many Witnesses: myself and Tye
Any Photos/Videos: none
Describe sighting in detail:

It was around 10 pm, Tye and I saw what we thought was a coyote coming out of the brush across from us along the edge of the field and raised its head high as it watched us before going back in.

Then it reappeared in the lower part of the field and we thought it was a coyote by the way it was trotting. It kept coming towards us and didn't seem to have any fear of us. We hurried down along the edge of the field to have a closer look of it. We got at least a couple of hundred yards with our spotlights on it the whole way and we could see it was a very large canine. It sometimes raised its head high to look at us which was 3 or 4 times. It had pointed ears and was grayish tan. I'm guessing it stood at least 4 feet or so high at the head, Tye thought it stood on its hind legs but I think it just raised its head.

As it kept coming closer, we also noticed it wasn't alone as we saw another set of eyes which we took as a juvenile. What was even stranger, when it then turned to leave it crawled across the field on its belly and seemed to have changed its appearance. It appeared to have been very long and very dark gray or blackish in color as it crawled away. Tye and I looked over at each other and said "did you see that? " We both said "what was that? "

When we saw it again it raised its head high to watch us and disappeared in the brush where it first came out of. Again we saw the juvenile. After that we went squatching down the road and we heard a strange high pitched whining that kept on for about 15 minutes before moving away and became quiet. We heard something walking in the woods as the sound got louder. It wasn't a coyote or fox or owl. I've never heard this down there before.

After we went back to the tent, we started hearing what sounded like a hyena-like laughing almost all night long and it woke me up early the next morning. I remember hearing this before years ago in the same location and always took it as a hyena. It is very strange! I didn't find any footprints because the soil was getting very dry.

We believe it maybe a Shunka Warakin, a large hyena-like canine that has been reported in Iowa and other states in the Midwest. This creature did seem to have a longish neck and long legs. We don't believe it was a wolf which have been seen in the county. "Coy dogs" are frequently seen and I think they look much like a hyena with longer forelimbs than back and are the size of a German Sheppard or small wolf but I don't believe that is what we saw. We saw 2 coyotes the following night crossing the field and there was no comparison. They took off as soon as the saw us so unlike this creature. There must be several of these creatures and must be breeding according to the juvenile that was with it. We now have have several trail cams up, hopefully capture it on film but nothing yet.

- End Report -

Thanks goes to our good buddy Corey for sending in his report. Lets all hope he can get a game camera photo of this creature.

The Shunka Warakin -
is an animal mentioned in American folklore that is said to resemble a wolf, a hyena, or both. According to cryptozoologist Loren Coleman, shunka warak'in is an Ioway term meaning "carries off dogs". Coleman suggested that the creature was some animal unknown to modern sources.

Here is a possible Shunka Warakin mounted. It was shot in 1886 by Ammon Hutchins in Montana and is the only possible physical evidence of the creature.

If anyone else has seen a possible Shunka Warakin, then please let us know.
