Researcher Spotlight: Bob Titmus
The Tracker Who Treated Bigfoot Like a Real Animal Long Before Anyone Else Did.
Bob Titmus is one of the most important and most debated names in early Bigfoot research. A taxidermist by trade and a tracker by instinct, Titmus approached the subject with a seriousness that set him apart from the showmen and storytellers of his era. He wasn’t chasing fame, cameras, or conferences. He was chasing signs: tracks, hair, movement patterns, and behavior. And he spent decades in the deep timber doing it.
Titmus was one of the first people to reach Bluff Creek after the Patterson–Gimlin filming in 1967. Instead of gawking at the site, he did what a real tracker does: he followed the creature’s path and cast ten additional footprints that weren’t in the film. Those casts became some of the most important pieces of physical evidence in the entire field. They showed consistent weight, stride, and mid‑tarsal flexibility, details hoaxers in the 60s wouldn’t have known to fake.
But Titmus wasn’t without controversy. Some researchers felt he held information too tightly or that he was overly secretive about his methods and findings. Others believed he was simply protecting the integrity of his work in a field full of hoaxes and opportunists. What’s undeniable is that he was respected by the people who actually knew the woods: hunters, loggers, and early investigators who recognized a man who could read the ground like a book.
Bob Titmus represents the old-school backbone of Bigfoot research: quiet, disciplined, and deeply committed. He didn’t care about being a personality. He cared about the truth, and he left behind evidence that still fuels debate today.
