Bald Peter Butte Bigfoot
I love the old stories. You have to keep in mind that this takes place before the coining of the names sasquatch or Bigfoot. The gorilla had not yet been discovered. There are no natural monkeys or apes in North America. Therefore, when men came across unusual creatures that resembled a man, and walked on two feet like a man, they called them "Wild Men".
In 1885 in Lebanon, Oregon, news sources ran stories about a "wild man" discovered who was supposed to be the long lost John Mackentire.
Four years earlier, Mackentire and another man went hunting in the mountains east of Albany. He mysteriously disappeared without a trace.
December 31,1885, Mr. Fitzgerald's hunting party was in the Bald Peter Butte area in the Cascades when Mr. Fitzgerald saw a man resembling the long lost Mackentire. He was entirely naked, his body covered in hair like an animal. In Fitzgerald's words: "a complete wild man".
When first seen, the Wild Man was eating the raw flesh of a deer. The men were able to get within a few yards when the creature saw them and ran away.
Two years before this event, Isaac Banty claimed he saw the Wild Man in the same location.
Locals believed that when Mackentire disappeared, he lost his mind, becoming deranged. He resorted to finding food in the mountains, probably sheltering in a cave somewhere. It was commonly believed that a man would grow hair over his entire body as protection against the elements if he were forced to live without other protection in the wild.
There is no further mention of poor John Mackentire or of the hair-covered Wild Man. It is the opinion of bigfoot historians that the creature sighted on Bald Peter Butte was most likely a bigfoot, not a man gone wild. Many "wild man" stories throughout these early days most likely were stories of bigfoot encounters. By taking that term into account, historians can discover even more stories of our elusive friends.
