The Kitsap, Washington, 911 Call
In 1996 [sometimes mistakenly reported as 1990] a man dialed 911 to report "someone or something" outside his suburban home. Outside of a released recording of the call, there is little known about this incident. Some call it real; some say fake.
On the "fake" side is that the Sheriff's Department responded to the call. Reports say that they found no evidence of any kind of intruder. There are also those who say that if it was not a man in the yard, then it was most likely a bear.
Let's take a look at the bear theory. First, the bear had to have been walking on it's back legs the entire time that the witness was watching it. While bears will rise up on their hind legs and walk around, they are generally not known to do this for extended lengths of time. Injured bears or a rare mutation could cause this type of activity. The witness also stated that the intruder seemed to be about 6'9". This is not outside of the range of a bear's height while on its hind legs; if a bear, however, this one would have been on the larger end of the scale. It makes one wonder why no other residents of the area had come across any evidence of such a large bear in the neighborhood.
At this time, also, black bears were not in that area. The closest reported population were located up near the Canadian border, approximately 180 miles from the Kitsap Peninsula. It is not impossible for a bear to travel that distance. Just not very probable, having had to get through or around the Seattle metro area without being seen. Bears do have territories that they roam through while pursuing food, but are generally not known for their migration tendencies.
As for the intruder being a man, the witness talks all around that possibility. Although making the statement "someone", he followed that up with "something". The tone of the witness's voice, the way he speaks with the operator, all leans towards this being a true event. However, it will probably never be completely settled if real or fake.
Here is the transcript from the call :
911 Dispatch : 911, what are you reporting?
Caller : . . . Uh. . . we got someone or something crawling around out here . . .
911 : Did you see what it was -- was it a person or an animal or . . . ?
Caller : I can't tell. All's I know is that my sensor light came on and I just happened to glance and see this thing running across the yard, a good-sized man or something that looks like a man, I don't know what it was, just that it ran across the yard.
911 : OK. You've had problems in the neighborhood before?
Caller : Yeah, my dog was killed here just recently. I don't know what it was, whatever it is it's running. I couldn't catch it if I was gonna chase it. But whatever, it was, it was standing up. I'm out here looking through the window now and I don't see anything, I don't wanna go outside. . . Jesus Christ ! You better -- God D****!
911 : . . . hello?
Caller : "Get somebody out here!
911 : What's going on now, sir?
Caller : that son of a b*tch is about 6 foot 9, I don't know . . .
911 : You see him now, sir?
Caller : Yes, I'm looking right at him ! ! !
911 : Uh-oh. OK. Hang on . . .
Caller : He's right ---
911 : Is he in your yard, sir?
Caller : Yeah. God, he's big.
911 : Ok. What's he doing in your yard?
Caller: . . . he's looking at me!
911 : Oh - the guy is on foot . . this ?
Caller : I don't know what it --it -- it's a big, real big person, that's all I can say.
911 : Ok. but it is a, it is a person.
Caller : yeah, I'd say it was a person, or somebody really big. But he's all in black. . . he's . . .
911 : Is he a black male, or a white male? Or did you see whether -- or was he just wearing black?
Caller : He's all black and he's big, he is big.
