Mono Lake Bigfoot

In 1991, a science teacher and his family went on vacation. Little did they know that 17 years later their trip to Mono Lake, California, would become a "hit" movie.
May 18, 1991 was a cold, overcast day with a strong wind blowing. There was still a little snow on the surrounding mountain peaks. When they arrived at the lake, their car was the only one in the parking lot. The area was desolate, deserted.

At 9:17 a.m. the teacher began shooting the video (VHS) of the hike the family set out on. After a short period of time, they all finally decided to leave because of the wind and the cold. The family returned to the hotel and after their weekend, returned home. The video shot that day became part of their family vacation collection and they would bring it out and watch it along with other videos with family and friends.

On April 19, 2008 the daughter, now age 22, was watching the video in the downstairs family room when she suddenly called out for her dad to come downstairs. He ran in, expecting some sort of crisis, only to find his ex-wife and daughter telling him to watch the part of the video they had on the screen.

When he saw what they were pointing out, it "made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. . . And it was something none of us had ever noticed in almost 17 years of watching this tape."

It was just before he turned off the camera, that it caught something very large and black moving between two rock formations -- just a short distance from where the family had been hiking.

Here is a short clip from the footage:

"It was completely black with no differentiation in color or texture and walked upright like a human but with a gate[sic] more like a primate. At first I thought it was a bear, but after going over the video many times and finally digitizing and sharpening it I am now unsure what to think," the witness stated.

He had looked at the video footage showing the family members at the same distance from the camera as the unknown figure. He could easily see distinct details and variation in the clothing, hair, face and hands. In contrast, when looking at the creature, the figure showed none of those distinctions.

The shape of the body does not resemble a human The head is too large, the arms are too long. Although the figure does resemble a bear at one angle, the stance and gait don't add up to being a bear.  It is in the video for only a few seconds as the witness was focused on catching a last sweep of the scenery, the lake and mountains.

The video was submitted to the BFRO in 2008. After the video became public, some have suggested that it was a person, perhaps in a costume. The BFRO states that if it were a person, they had to have been wearing a large, full-length brown fur coat with excessively long, furry sleeves. And they stressed that the man had nothing to gain by releasing the tape.

BFRO: " The animal . . . appears to be upright and bipedal and muscular. It appears to have long arms and makes long strides with its legs. It does not appear to be a bear. It appears to be either a man in a bigfoot costume or an actual bigfoot.

"The profile of the cameraman, combined with the random circumstances of the videotaping, strongly suggest this is not a man in a costume -- not a hoax."

As for the witness, he stated that he has always been extremely skeptical of Bigfoot being real. And he was still suspending judgement.
