Deepfakes: Can We Believe What We See On Video?
By Dorraine Fisher
We can often get triggered by something a certain politician or prominent figure in the world has said, but are we sure they really said it? Are we really sure that everything we’re seeing these days is real?
Deepfakes are becoming more popular and more convincing. So convincing that we can’t really trust what we see anymore. We all need to be very careful of this technology because we’ve been programmed to believe that “seeing is believing.” But today we have to be really careful of believing everything we see and hear. Because technology has become very advanced. More advanced than most of us realize.
Deepfakes are technological manipulations of video and sound. Deepfake creators replace a person’s image and voice with artificial likenesses. They use the technology to manipulate media and create fake videos of certain people for many nefarious purposes as their biggest purpose thus far is to be used as weapons to push certain political and social agendas.
According to Norton Internet Security (us.norton.com), Deepfake technology is a huge “emerging threat” to internet security and the truth. They define it as this: an evolving form of artificial intelligence (AI) that’s adept at making you believe certain media is real, when in fact it’s a compilation of doctored images and audio designed to fool you. A surge in what’s known as “fake news” shows how deepfake videos can trick audiences into believing made-up stories.
But don’t just take my word for it. Check out this video about deepfakes by Nova PBS Official and tell us what you think.
