Unknown Creature Investigation
A couple of weeks ago, we got a report, along with some photos, of a possible humanoid creature. The possible creature was seen sitting in a tree on a nearby mountainside.
What follows is the initial report, more photos, our initial thoughts, and our investigation and conclusion.
This report came via trusted friends and took place in Harlan County, Kentucky. The initial sighting took place at approximately 6:43 pm on June 5th. The original witness, a person I know well, wished to remain anonymous. Another friend, whom I also know very well, contacted me with the images and report. Having known these people for all my life, I knew they were not pranking or hoaxing. They saw something.
The first witness saw something that appeared odd in a tree. This tree was on a ridge across a highway. I'm not sure of the distance, but it was probably 300 yards or more.
The mountain ridge is dense with trees and foliage.
After seeing it, the witness took a picture with his cell phone. They then rushed back to their house to get some binoculars. They scanned the area but could not relocate the figure.
They told another person, the one who contacted me, and they ran to see the figure, but could not locate it.
Some people, who saw the photo, said that it could possibly be a bird or perhaps a large owl.
I and the person who contacted me agreed that we did not think it was a bird. On that mountain, there are three or four dead trees. This creature appeared to be sitting in one of them.
To test the bird/owl theory, I reached out to a bird expert and friend, Guy Luneau, to get his thoughts. It was not long before I got an email back confirming that this indeed was not a bird. Guy asked me if it could be a hoax, and I told him I knew the people and that it was not a hoax. Guy also said the figure looked humanoid and that he eagerly waited for my investigation results.
We all agreed the creature looked humanoid and appeared to have its arms around its knees.
On June 6th, the unknown creature made another appearance. This time, an additional 3-4 people saw it. One witness was using binoculars and scanning the dead tree limbs. Another witness ran to the house to get a scoped rifle in an effort to see the creature more clearly. A couple of the witnesses stated that they thought it had legs.
I got with TCC team member Tony Felsoi to investigate. Tony and I thought the figure resembled a gargoyle. There was actually a report from years ago of 2 hunters who encountered a gargoyle-type figure around Elkhorn, KY, if I remember correctly.
Once we arrived at the location, I set up a camera and got out my binoculars. Tony was also using binoculars. We scanned the dead trees looking for the creature. We found it! It was still in the same spot.
I took several pictures and videos of the "creature". We were able to identify it.
Before we went and investigated this, I would have gone to my grave thinking it was some kind of humanoid creature. Knowing the witnesses and knowing they were not hoaxing, and that they were interested in finding out just what this was, made it all the more intriguing. Plus, you add that this was on the side of a mountain, which is very hard to climb, and you had a wonderful mystery.
So, it turns out this was a broken branch and some dead brown leaves. If you look at the leaves, they kind of do give off a humanoid appearance.
My guess would be that with the first sighting, the sunlight was really beaming in there and making the figure have that pinkish look. The next day, the figure had a shadow from the nearby trees cast over it.
So, while this turned out to be something natural, it can be a good lesson for all of us that sometimes things are not what they seem. That investigation must be done, and an attempt to identify any unknowns should be made. This also shows how easily things like this can fool us. This is why real investigations need to be done when possible. But I will admit that the original image looks really humanoid. It would be easy to doubt myself and the ball of leaves.
While this turned out not to be an unknown creature, it was a wonderful and exciting report.
A special thanks to all those who reported this to me.
Thanks
