Sleep Paralysis Or Something More Sinister?

With 50-70 million American adults reporting that they have a sleep disorder, it's an issue that needs to be addressed. Sleep disorders can vary from moderate to chronic insomnia, a obstructive sleep apnea or sleep paralysis, and a lack of sleep can lead to poor physical and mental health. Sometimes it's hard to sleep when we're convinced that something goes bump in the night, so whether the prospect of a Bigfoot sighting is keeping you awake or you hear creaks in the house that don't exist, is sleep paralysis affecting you, or is something more spooky occurring?
What is sleep paralysis?

It might be that you have done everything right to enter into a peaceful slumber and you have invested in a soft yet supportive base to give you the most relaxed sleep, but then you wake up filled with fear. Sleep paralysis occurs when you wake in the night and you can't speak or move and you may even feel like hands are holding you down. Although these symptoms only last a few seconds, this could be a scary experience and there were, and still are, beliefs that this is supernatural experience involving demons, shadowy figures, aliens and strange noises.

It doesn't affect everyone

It's reported that sleep paralysis affects up to 17% of the adult population and it is still unclear as to why it occurs. It may be genetic, but it is also reported to be linked to post-traumatic stress disorder and also more likely to be experienced by individuals who have anxiety or depression. There is no guaranteed way to prevent sleep paralysis, but there are some basic approaches to your nighttime routine that may help with a peaceful sleep.

Feed your body and mind

If you're waking in the night it could be because you're hungry and your blood sugar has dropped, so have a snack about an hour before going to bed. Avoid sugary snacks or anything that contains caffeine and instead fill up on high protein foods and ensure you drink plenty of water. Whether you have been watching television or you have just seen a UFO, you may need to switch your brain off before sleep and meditation is a good way to do this. Meditation is the practice of focusing on the present and not the past or the future. It's important to control your breathing and feel your body so that your body relaxes and your mind becomes calm.

Whether you are waking up due to sleep paralysis or for a reason you cannot identify, there are some basic approaches to feature in your night time routine to aid your sleep. We may all have different beliefs about what occurs after dark and we know that sleep paralysis does exist. What we can't be sure of though is whether anyone else is in the room with us.
