The Meaning Of Dreams: Dreams About People
The Most Complicated Dreams To Interpret

By Dorraine Fisher

People often ask me to interpret their dreams. And the most complicated aspects of them is deciding what the people that appear in their dreams mean. It’s not an easy question to answer. Because the people in our dreams represent something other than just who they are. Often the people in our dreams aren’t people we know. So what are these people trying to tell us?

First of all, dreams have a spiritual and metaphorical nature. They aren’t cut and dry and they aren’t literal. Everything we see in them is symbolic. This includes everything in them: colors, shapes, animals, objects, AND people. They’re all their to tell us something about what’s going on in our unconscious mind that we’re not acknowledging consciously.
The basic concept we have to understand is that we humans are all connected. The idea that we’re all separate from each other is an illusion. We are all one complete organism. Everyone on the planet, whether we realize it or like it, is part of us and we’re part of them. And the people we encounter in our lives can act as our mirrors that allow us to see aspects of ourselves we may not want to face. Whenever you dislike someone, you have to ask yourself, what is it about this person that reminds you of what you dislike about yourself? By this same principal, people in your dreams serve the same purpose. They are there to tell you about aspects of yourself you’re not acknowledging in your waking life.

Therefore, when you dream about people you don’t know, it’s telling you about the many hidden aspects of yourself of which you aren’t aware. When someone you don’t like turns up in your dream, they are there to mirror aspects of you that you don’t like about yourself. If you dream about someone you hate, the dream is telling you about the traits in them that you hate and fear you may have within yourself.

If you dream about someone you know, first ask yourself how you’re interacting with this person in the dream. Are you friendly with them? Are you fighting with them, or trying to make them go away? Are you being affectionate toward them, though you would never do that in real life? Now, ask yourself what trait about this person comes to mind when you first think of them. That person represents something to you. And the first trait that comes to your mind when you think of them is a clue to the meaning of your dream about them.

For example, if you dream of a friend who you feel is irresponsible and represents lack of responsibility to you, you’re wrestling with that aspect of lack or responsibility within yourself. If you dream you’re fighting with your irresponsible friend, then you’re fighting the aspect of lack of responsibility within yourself. If you have a dream that you’re hanging out with that person, enjoying their company, or even being affectionate to them, you may be feeling a burden of responsibility within yourself and desiring to be more reckless and free like this friend. Depending on the circumstances and context of the dream scape, whatever this person means to you in your waking life is what they’re trying to tell you about within yourself.

And finally, we all have masculine and feminine aspects within ourselves, no matter what gender we embody. If we dream about an unknown female, she is there to represent the feminine aspects of ourselves. These could possibly be our more nurturing and receptive side. If we dream about an unknown male, he’s there to represent the male aspects within ourselves, such as the more proactive or even aggressive side.

Therefore, if you dream a strange woman comes and tries to help you, it means you may need to approach a situation in your waking life from a more “feminine/nurturing/receptive” side. If you dream you’re fighting with an unknown woman, it means you are denying or fighting those feminine aspects within yourself.

Alternatively, if an unknown man appears in your dream, it may be telling you that a situation in your waking life may require more assertive or even aggressive measures in order to resolve it. If you dream you’re fighting with an unknown male or running away from him, it may mean you are being too passive or running away from a situation in your waking life that you need to face head on.

It’s easy to dismiss people in your dreams as not being important, or to simply believe they represent the person that they are to you in real life, but this is not the case. They’re there to bring you a symbolic message. And you can decode this message by using these guidelines and gain better clarity within your mind about the things that might be bothering you in your waking life. After all, that’s what dreams are really for. To help you.
