I recently saw a black panther here in my area of Southeast Kentucky and I made a few remarks about it on my facebook page. This caught the attention of a lot of people who have seen similar large cats. The thing is, in may of these area we are told there are no big cats. But yet people continue to see them and report them.

Here is one such report, that was recently submitted to me.

- Start Report -

Name: Wyatt ******

Email Address: On file

State: Delaware

County: Sussex

Date of Sighting: July 25, 2010

Time of Day:
10:00 PM

Nearest Town:
Rehoboth Beach

Length of Sighting: 2:00 minutes

How many Witnesses: 5

Any Photos/Videos:
No

Describe sighting in detail:

Me, my sister, and some other people we met while we were camping were walking on the beach late at night. When we started noticing people's stuff still laying on the beach, like a book and a boogie board. This was very odd since nobody else seemed to be on the beach but us, and that is when we saw the cat. It was running incredibly fast and it was way to big to be a normal cat. The tail was also way to long, and it looked like a panther.
One of the people we were with started running after it but it escaped. We were all in shock, me and my sister were terrified. In addition we came back to tell everyone else but they did not seem to care, so we told a ranger and they never did find the cat. It was not until last year I realized it was a Phantom Cat.

- End Report -

Thanks for the report, Wyatt.

So, just what was this large cat? It remains unclear but it would seem that if it was just a normal house cat, that one of the five witnesses could have been able to identify it as such.

Cats of all sizes are incredibly quiet and normally don't make a lot of sound. It appears these large cats are for the most part, able to go undetected by humans. It is chance sightings, like this one, that gives us a pause and a time to think about what might be lurking in our communities.

Thanks
~Tom~

Mystery Cat
Black Panther - taken in Bell county, KY

Proof of Big Cats in Southeastern Kentucky

I can remember growing up and hearing my papaw and my dad talk about seeing large cats in and around Bell County, Ky. As I got older the stories seems to become less and less but over the last few years there has been a increase of sightings in this area. I personally know 3 or 4 people who have seen these big cats. If you ask Fish and Wildlife about Panther/Cougars in this area they tell us that there is none around here. They also told us that about black bears.

Well, I know the people who took this photo and I know where it was taken but I will not reveal them or the location. It was taken Bell County. The person who took this picture had this to say.

"...got pictures of three different black ones and one yellow one. The yellow one was for sure a mountain lion."

I'm working on getting some more photos of these big cats. I hope to have another report at some point.

Here is a the full picture from above.

If you have evidence of  panthers/cougars in Southeastern Kentucky, feel free to contact me.

Thanks
~Tom~

State: Ky
County: Madison
Date of Sighting: Between 1996 & 2004
Time of Day: some were daytime & some were at night.
Nearest Town: Berea
Length of Sighting: as much as 20 seconds
How many Witnesses: 1
Any Photos/Videos: no
Describe sighting in detail:

My first sighting was in 96 when I was driving north on Menelaus Rd. in Berea to visit my in-laws. I had just passed the PPG factory when I noticed a cat in the crotch of a tree on the PPG property. It was all black & about the size of a medium size dog. This was no dog. I stopped in the road & got a really good look at it. I'll never forget those piercing yellow eyes.

Another sighting I had was around the Ellipse Street/Rash Road intersection. I saw a very large black cat crossing the cut corn field about 75 yards from the road. This happened around the fall of 2003.

Another encounter I had was on Jefferson Street in Berea. It was 2001, around 3-3:30 a.m. & I was headed back to work. As I was going thru the stop light, I noticed what appeared to be a full grown bobcat coming down the hill to my right. It noticed me & did a U-turn, going back up the hill.

Another sighting occurred (August 2004) when I was going thru a spell of not sleeping very well. I would go out on our deck to listen to nature, read with a small flashlight or play with one of the Boxers we raised at the time. It was about 4 a.m. & I noticed something between my house & our neighbor's house. There right before me was a mother mountain lion with two cubs. Freaked me out. These were all tan in color except for the tuft of darker brown at the end of their tails. I watched them go out of sight due to the fact there was enough light from the street light on the other end of the property.

I remember the closest sighting to date. It was Thanksgiving about the first or second year we lived at Peachtree Drive here in Berea. After dinner, I was too full to take the garbage out like I should have, so I set it on the deck. The deck is 12 feet off the ground but it has steps to the ground. At the same time, we had this bat-crap crazy bird dog named COCO. She was a lunatic, plain & simple. Anyway, that night, she was barking like she never had before. I looked out & noticed she was looking toward the deck. I got up & grabbed my .45 to go see what was going on. I looked out onto the deck & lo & behold there's a large bobcat in the garbage having a good time in our scraps. I watched it for a few & went back to bed. heck on it, right? These sightings at Peachtree Drive here in Berea KY.
Thank you for your interest.

Big Cats in Kentucky
Big Cat in Deane, Ky?
I just got a report of a large cat sighting in Kentucky, I don't think it has really been reported until now. I also have more information below the report.

-Start Report-
My name is Randy Isaac and I'm from Letcher co KY.
One night around 9:30-10:00pm in July or August 1997, a friend and I were traveling on hwy 317 going into Deane KY.
We were going down what we call Rockhouse Mountain when we rounded a curve and all a sudden a big dark colored cat with about a 3-3 1/2 foot tail, jumped from the right off an embankment crossed the road and over the hill. We looked at each other and I said, " did u just see what I saw?".
His eyes were big as silver dollars and he said, " yes, a big ******* black panther!".
I knew he had seen it because you would have to be blind not to have seen it.
I know how big it was and I know it was dark colored but not dark black, but I'll call it that just for the sake of dark and light.
I had a guy that lives over that way tell me he saw one in the same curve and he had no idea that we had seen one there.
I told him that we saw it there to and we couldn't believe it was in the exact same place. I talked to a couple boys that live down the road from me and they started talking about thing like that and told me they saw a big black cat about 100yds above that.
The didn't know about my sighting either. I again had to bring my sighting up and we all were astonished we had seen it in the same place. This was just last month that I talked to those boys. I don't care whether they saw this big cat or not, because I know what we saw, but this just told me that they must stay in the same general area.

Some guys that live above me supposedly shot a big cat back here on the mountain and killed it. They got scared that they would go to jail when they saw it up close so they threw it over the mountain. They told a few people about it but no one believed them, but a couple boys went and found it where they threw it over the hill and they swore it was a lion, like u see in the circus. They said it was huge and had a real short mane. I couldn't figure that one out but they also said it was a lion. I'm gonna catch up with them to find out more.

They boys that shot it were up there drinking and cooking and said it came up to the fire and they shot it. They swore it was a lion before those other boys saw it dead
Those boys aren't the type to make something like that up. They were truly afraid if getting in trouble.
They said the guy that had the one in Jenkins couldn't afford to feed it and he turned it loose. He kept it in a big cage beside the road and u could see it driving by. It was female. We figured that was it. Heads up in the mountain there
It was about same time. Said they shot it with a shotgun and it fell in its tracks. Must have been close.

-End Report-

It has long been rumored, and I believe it, that the old Tombstone Junction Amusement park, which had a zoo, turned all the animals loose when they closed up the business. The business closed suddenly. I always thought this could have been were the alligators came from a few years back in Knox county. So who really knows how they got started here, I personally think some have been introduced to the area by wildlife officials.

Anyway, I stumbled across this photo, that was taken in Kentucky by a trail camera. It appears to show a black cat. I really don't know who to credit for the photo, sorry. Some say this is just a normal house cat and it may be.

This next photo was reportedly taken in Harlan, Kentucky, but I have seen different counties listed as to where it was taken, which raises questions about the authenticity of the location.
I have no information on this photo.

Now before you totally dismiss the possibility of big cats in Kentucky watch this News video.

Notice how the wildlife guy totally dismisses the big cats, much like they dismissed the bear reports in my area for awhile, until a lot of people started seeing them.

Here is another report of a large black cat in southern Kentucky - Click Here

I have also heard some other local people talk about seeing black panthers in this area over the years, I do think there is something to it. If you have seen a big cat/black panther/cougar in an area that they are not suppose to be in, then please submit it to us.

A big thanks to Randy for sharing his sighting.

Thanks
~Tom~

Possible big cat on game cam
Big Cat in MI
The above photo comes to us from Tom Thomas, after noticing something was getting into his bird feeder and bending over a metal pole, Tom set up a game cam. There had also been some odd noises around his house.

Tom's game cam captured the photo above of what appears to be a big cat, while this may not be what was getting into the bird feeder, it is an odd catch. This was taken in St. Clair county, MI.
Michigan is no stranger to big cat reports, just this past August there was reports from the Northeast side of Detroit.

In St. Clair county there has been 10 reported big cat sightings according to Michigancougar.com with a couple of the reports saying it was a black cougar. In total, according to the website, there has been over 1,800 reports of cougar incidents reported in the state of Michigan.

Here is an enhancement of Tom's photo

is this a black cougar in MI
Black Cougar?
Mr. Thomas guess the height from the ground to the top of the head to be about 16 inches.
What do you think? could this be a black cougar in Michigan?
A special thanks to Tom Thomas for letting us share the photo.

Thanks
~Tom~

cougar -
http://www.louisianasportsman.com/details.php?id=1476

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has received photographic evidence of the second and third documented cougar occurrences in the state in recent history.

Private citizens sent trail camera pictures from two different sites to the department in September. LDWF Large Carnivore Program Manager Maria Davidson and LDWF Natural Heritage Zoologist Beau Gregory then conducted site investigations that confirmed the authenticity of the photographs.

"The department interviewed the photo providers and investigated the sites and photographs. After inspecting all of the evidence, we have concluded with the best of our abilities that the photos are in fact real and of a cougar," Davidson said.

The first photograph was taken in Natchitoches parish on Sept. 4, and the second was taken in Allen parish on Sept. 29. The sites are approximately 100 miles apart, leading to speculation that the same cougar could be in both photos.
