Making A Great Scary Video To Share Online

If you’ve got a scary story you want to tell the world, you can film it on your smartphone - 52% of people make videos on their phones. It’s a simple way to make a short movie that is high quality, and perfect for sharing online. In America, 92% of people watch and share videos online; in fact, 82% of all internet traffic is video. This means that your homemade creepy video could quite easily go viral and get a mainstream following.

Location, location, location

Location is everything when you're creating a scary video. You're looking to create the maximum atmosphere possible. Think back to 1999 when The Blair Witch Project was released. The movie set a precedent for creating a feeling of horrifying tension, using very simple camera techniques. The forest location gave the viewer a sense of isolation. The trees look over the unhappy campers like spooky, dark sentinels. When you're making your scary video, go and visit your local haunted house; check out the abandoned building at the far side of town; head to the park at twilight when the gates are locked. Location is paramount when setting the scene for your scary movie: choose somewhere where you wouldn’t want to be alone in the dark.

Create a legend

Anyone that has seen Ringu will know that all good horror films start with a legend - a back story that drives the fear and has a marked effect on how the characters behave. Before you start filming your video, make sure that you create a legend if there isn’t one already. It can be something as simple as a story about a man who was murdered in your location 100 years ago, or that your location was the burial ground for some plague victims. You can then use this legend to help your video get discovered on Youtube. Use hashtags and keywords in your posts for ultimate SEO. That way, your followers can easily discuss and share your video with others.

That one terrifying character

What would Nightmare on Elm Street be without Freddie? Or Halloween without Michael Myers? Every credible scary movie has a character that is the driver for the fear. Think of The Nun, Saw, Pennywise, Jason, Chucky and Pinhead. It doesn’t even have to be a physical person; it could simply be a threatening presence, like The Mothman, in The Mothman Prophecies. Your scary character will drive how all the other people in your video will react. You should always make sure that your terrifying character has a legitimate motive for creating such horror - this is usually linked to the legend. Make sure that you use the name of your character when posting your video online, to boost your search engine ratings. It should be something creepy and very memorable.

It doesn’t matter if your scary video is only five minutes long: it can still create a buzz on the internet and capture the imaginations of others. Just find a good location for filming, create yourself a legend and the perfect creepy character, and you will soon be scaring the socks off everybody.
