Mountain Monsters - Part 2

In season two, episode six, the Mountain Monsters crew went hunting for the legendary Sheepsquatch of Boone County, West Virginia.

Sheepsquatch is traditionally described as a quadrapedal, bear-sized, white, wooly creature with horns, with a long and pointed head somewhat resembling a dog's. In addition to the horns, it is also said to have long, saber-like teeth; the horns similar to those on a young goat. It's front legs end in paw-like hands and it has a long and hairless tail. It is said to smell like sulfur.

Theories on what this creature could possibly be include an undiscovered species (a cryptid); a humanoid sheep; a new bear species (which is said to be the favored theory of some cryptozoologists).

So much for the original legends.  Most of the more recent accounts seem to lean more towards possible encounters with a white or light colored bigfoot.
And so, enters the creature for which  the Mountain Monsters team went looking.

There was a sighting reported in 1994 by a former Navy seaman. He saw the white creature come through a line of brush and kneel down to drink from the creek. After drinking for a few minutes, it crossed the creek and continued on towards a nearby road. He claimed to watch the creature for a little while until it disappeared into the surrounding bushes.  Our seaman also reported that shortly before viewing this creature he had eaten a "mound of shroom caps" he had found on the forest floor.

The next year, a couple driving through Boone County saw a large, white creature sitting in the ditch by the road. They stopped their car to see what it could be. The creature leaped out the ditch and attacked the car. Scared to death, the two drove off as quick as they could. When they got home, they noticed several large scratches on the side of the car where the creature had attacked.

Kentucky has also had it's share of Sheepsquatch (White bigfoot) sightings.

These  reported encounters also come from the 1990s.

A car full of women returning home after a family reunion were driving slow and careful on treacherous, snowy roads. Suddenly a large, white animal stepped out of the woods. It appeared to be 7 to 8 foot tall and was covered in shaggy, white hair with legs like a man. It's face reminded them of a sheep and  it had horns. The creature froze when it saw the car, then bolted into the woods. The women did not pause but continued to drive away as fast as the road conditions allowed.

A miner saw a big, white-grey thing that he refused to call an animal. He also refused to say more than that.

A passing motorist claimed to see an animal up on a hillside that had a long face and seemed to be covered in rags. Or, he added, maybe it was shedding a winter coat.

A hunter talked of seeing a creature crouched next to a river, drinking. It had horns and what he thought were human hands.

Sheepsquatch also made an appearance on the first episode of "Monsters and Mysteries in America" in March 2013. Two friends, Ricky Joyce and Dakota Cheeks, while hunting one weekend in Kentucky ran into a big, white creature. It was reported to be at least 9 foot tall and that it gave an "ungodly, gut-curling growl" and ran towards the two, ready to attack.

There is also the Maryland Goat Man and The Pope Lick Monster in Kentucky (part man, part goat, part sheep). Sightings have also been reported in Virginia along the West Virginia border of similar large, white, hairy creatures.

The Mountain Monster crew naturally encountered a more ferocious beast than most of the reported encounters. After all, why would you have Willy build one of his famous traps for a beast that walks or runs away from you?

In my opinion, if people are finding themselves looking at a tall, white, hairy creature in the woods of West Virginia, Kentucky, or any other state, I think they're looking at a bigfoot.  At least, until I run across one with horns. Open mind. Open mind.
