England’s Most Haunted Locations Revealed

England is home to one of the most haunted cities in the world. London has been cited as a top scary location due to popular tourist spots, including the Tower of London and Westminster Abbey, being possessed by the ghostly spirits of monks, soldiers, and ‘The Gray Lady’. But step away from the capital city and you’ll find even more hair-raising locations in some of England’s most haunted counties.

Pluckley, Kent

The village of Pluckley in Kent has been crowned the most haunted British village by the Guinness Book of World Records. Should you dare to stay in the village, you can expect to encounter up to 16 ghosts, all of which will send a spine-tingling chill down your back. Locals say that the harrowing screams of The Watercress Lady who burned to death can still be heard today, meanwhile, the school headmaster who killed himself often makes his presence known.

Windsor Castle, Berkshire

It’s no surprise that Windsor Castle, the largest castle in England, is one of the most haunted places in the country. It was built back in 1070 by William the Conqueror and has seen its fair share of grisly goings-on since then, including multiple untimely deaths. 25 ghosts are believed to haunt the vicinity, including the spirits of Elizabeth I and Richard III. But it's Henry VIII and his second wife Anne Boleyn who have two of the strongest presences in the castle. Witnesses describe the former monarch as a raging man who paces the hallways, while Anne is frequently seen sobbing at the window.

Eyam, Derbyshire

If you head to the village of Eyam during your visit to England, you’ll be able to participate in one of their daily ghost tours. Between 1665 and 1666, 260 people in Eyam died of the Bubonic Plague after they sacrificed themselves in an attempt to stop the deadly disease spreading elsewhere. With so many deaths occurring in such a short space of time, the village is now haunted by the spirits of those with unfinished business. Meanwhile, the only pub in the village, The Miners Inn, has its fair share of haunted tales. It’s not uncommon for visitors to witness the wife of the former landlord who was callously murdered. Whereas, the ghosts of two little girls who lost their lives in a fire are known to play upstairs.

With years of history behind it, England is home to some of the most haunted locations in the world. But rather than sticking to the possessed sites of London during your stay, head to its nearby counties to truly experience a chilling time.
