Conducting Your Own Séance

It’s human nature to wonder about the supernatural world, with 785,000 US women spending more than $1000 on psychic readings in 2015 and 145,000 people returning for consults within a year. Whether you want to connect with a deceased family member, you think you’re living with ghosts or you want a bit of fun, séances are an attempt to communicate with spirits. Séances go back as far as 1760 and gained great popularity in the mid-nineteenth century with the founding of the religion Spiritualism. There are many traditions around conducting a séance, many still followed today and maintain a strong focus on spiritualism.

Preparing For Your Séance

If you want to conduct your own séance you’ll need at least three willing participants, and many believe that the amount should be divisible by three. One participant is usually chosen to be the medium, usually because they’ve had a previous experience at a séance. You should then set up a round table as a circle is symbolic and believed to be necessary to communicate with spirits. Lighting aromatic candles will make the table more appealing, with the number three being important again, but the more the better as the warmth and light will draw spirits in. It’s best to choose candles with natural ingredients and delicate fragrances to avoid chemicals and pollutants burning into the room. Finish setting the scene by dimming lights and turning off distractions, such as phones and televisions, to create a perfect atmosphere.

Ouija Boards

A study asked mediums if they had communicated with the afterlife and 599 out of 615 said they had, many via ouija boards and during séances. Ouija boards were created in Baltimore, Maryland in 1890, but other talking boards were commonly used before this. You can easily make a ouija board by having every letter, numbers 0-9 and ‘yes’ and ‘no’ laid out on the table. Participants place their fingers on the planchette and are guided by the spirits to give answers to questions. Some religions embrace ouija boards while others warn against them, believing they can result in demonic possession and should be used with caution.

Summoning A Spirit

Contacting a spirit can be emotional, especially if it’s a loved one. It’s important to maintain control throughout and remain calm. To summon a spirit all participants should sit around the table and hold hands to strengthen the circle. You should chant together asking the spirit to communicate with you and continue to do this until you get a response. Ask simple questions to begin with. If a spirit is communicating via a medium it is easier to ask open questions and to get more information. When you are finished asking questions, or if you feel the séance is getting out of control, thank the spirit and ask them to leave peacefully, extinguish all candles and turn the lights on.

A séance can be very emotional, but also satisfying experience. You may not make contact on your first attempt, so patience is key and use caution. A larger group of participants will provide more support for each other, but participants need to believe that it’s possible to make contact or it could harm the chances of spirits making contact.
