The Tragedy Of Incidents Not Reported
By Dorraine Fisher

I’ve now been around cryptozoology and the paranormal long enough to have heard hundreds of very strange stories. Not just bigfoot, ghost, and UFO stories, but stories of other strange incidents that couldn’t be explained away by normal means. And it’s not my first thought to believe the people telling these stories are simply crazy or delusional. Many people I talk to are traumatized and/or experiencing some kind of post-traumatic stress from the incidents they witness. So the experiences were real enough to them to cause them emotional distress. And most feel some kind of shame or fear of ridicule if they DO actually decide to tell their story. And this is what I’d like to point out here; the tragedy of all this that is less obvious to most people.

Many of these stories I hear that people think are unique to them and have never happened to anyone else, are often similar or nearly identical to other stories I’ve heard before or am familiar with from other sources. Meaning these stories are not unique at all. The same things have happened to other people, and often they’ve happened to more people than we realize.

And no matter what the strange incident is, I think we need to understand that’s it’s important to tell someone about it. And preferably some kind of researcher who keeps records of these incidents on file for future reference. And we need to really take a look at how many similar stories we can collect on one subject.

And I’m happy to say that there are now more of us than ever that are happy to hear and record these stories without judgment or shaming of the witnesses. So, this is where I come to the tragic part.

The world is an exceedingly weird place. The more stories I hear, the more I wonder if we really understand anything about our world. There are forces out there that have yet to be explained. There are things going on around us that are beyond our comprehension, and outside the powers of science and reasoning; outside our basic understanding of...everything. And does that make them delusions? It certainly does NOT. It only means our work toward understanding reality and the universe is far from over. Just because science can’t explain it away, doesn’t mean it’s not real. Perhaps they just aren’t real in a sense we understand or accept...yet.

So, how do we come to understand? We stop listening to skeptics and limited minds and we start talking about them.

If there is something in these strange incidents that can be learned and understood, we do ourselves and knowledge a terrible disservice by not talking about what we experienced and putting it on a permanent record so no one forgets. Because if we actually did that, we may start seeing patterns emerge, and we may realize that there has to be something to this, and that we need to dig deeper to find the answers.

There are a lot of people out there that simply can’t accept ideas beyond their own comprehension. There are others who think science will teach them everything relevant they need to know about everything. And then there are others who believe it’s simply not intelligent to aspire to ideas that go beyond science or basic human understanding of the universe; that those subjects are simply too outlandish to even discuss. And then there are the rest who are simply too afraid to even think about or imagine that such scary things might exist so close to us in our own world. And this is the tragedy. Because human knowledge and understanding comes to a complete standstill. We can’t possibly learn anything new unless we all start feeling like we can talk about anything and everything, no matter how crazy some people think it is. Because I know personally that whatever has happened to you has likely happened to someone else. I’ve heard enough stories to know this now.

So, this is where skepticism does the most damage. Skepticism seeks to shut down a conversation. A conversation that might actually be keeping us from learning something new. Something very important, that could actually lead us to new knowledge that moves in directions that we never thought possible.

So, if something weird has happened to you, come to us. Tell us about it, or tell some other researcher you trust. But don’t keep it to yourself. Because if you do, our education beyond what we know and understand now comes to a complete halt...and this tragedy continues.
