It's a very wild area close to a large national forest (Wayne National). I was clearing brush on my hill when I found a large black cat that appeared to be bigger than a normal house cat. I was thinking OK this is likely a cat with Maine Coon genes. Then I saw it's mother. That cat was about 20" tall or more with a very long tail. I only got a glimpse of it for a few seconds but I know what I saw. The smaller cat actually followed me home and eagerly ate up some of the food I give to my own cats. It seemed as content as possible to be there. A couple of hours later I heard what could only be described as a call from a cat much larger than any house cat. It sounded more like a bobcat. There are bobcats where I live. A neighbor trapped one on the same hill where I was clearing brush. I don't own the entire hill. The smaller cat answered with a large cat type squall of it's own and took off running back to be with what was obviously it's mother. I never saw either again. I see lots of wildlife at my house. It's totally in the woods and bears are a common sight there. Black bears of course. But I've never seen a cat like that before. I have heard what others told me was the call of a mountain lion but that was from a quarter of a mile away. I've seen very large tracks too big for a bobcat. But the black cat I saw wasn't even really big enough to be a bobcat. They're bigger than most people think. I've seen those too. The black cat was very thin and long. The tail was especially long. It was at almost as long as the body. I'd estimate the tail to be about 20" long also. I have no idea what kind of cat it was. But it isn't the first animal I saw that I couldn't identify and I grew up in the woods of eastern Kentucky. I saw a blue racer at my house in Ohio. They are only supposed to exist in western Ohio but I know what I saw. We do have black racers in eastern Ohio but according to the experts there are no blue racers there. I know better. There's no mistaking the steel blue of a blue racer. I also saw a snake in Kentucky that was a vivid color of blue. It was marked like a ribbon snake but they aren't supposed to be in that part of Kentucky and they aren't that color. But what was really astonishing about that snake was it's speed. I was a boy of about 13 when I saw it. It ran so fast through our garden that it completely out ran me. I lost it after about 20 seconds. It was amazingly fast. I was no slow kid and I didn't have a chance of keeping up with that snake. I actually thought that was a blue racer until I learned later what a racer looked like. I was a kid and didn't know snakes at the time. I still don't know what kind of snake that was. I've never seen it in any book on Kentucky wildlife or any other book on wildlife for that matter. The old folks always talked about blue racers when I was young. It could be they all thought that snake was a blue racer because they described a snake like it when they talked about a blue racer. It was a very rural area and there weren't a lot of animal experts. But my grandmother was a college graduate in horticulture. She knew every plant in the area and every animal too I would have thought but no one I have seen has ever exactly described a snake like that one. I've only heard similar descriptions of what they called a blue racer.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-311661322449404694.post-82061974701606344342015-06-03T02:20:50.818-05:002015-06-03T02:20:50.818-05:00So keep looking for what's out there. My brother described a cat very similar to the one I saw. His dogs ran one up a tree when he was coon hunting one night. The cat jumped out of the tree and was about to kill two large hounds before my brother kicked it off of them. It ran after that. Those cats are out there. The place he saw that cat was about 4 miles from my house across the river in Kentucky.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-311661322449404694.post-46487353189037831402015-06-03T02:18:47.563-05:002015-06-03T02:18:47.563-05:00My house is about a mile from the Kentucky border ...My house is about a mile from the Kentucky border in the hills of SE Ohio. Do they even have a hunting season in states where they're not supposed to be? What about the one posting the guy had about seeing a mother mountain lion with two cubs? There says there's a breeding population somewhere. Large cat sightings seem to pop up in areas where they're supposed to have been eliminated by hunting but how do the authorities know for certain? I think the authorities are blowing smoke up people's backsides so they don't have to get off their lazy butts & do some real work. They need to enact some kind of law that says it's ok to kill one of these cats if they are in or near populated areas or if the cat is diseased or acting aggressively. Somebody needs to be aware that this isn't just a one time thing.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-311661322449404694.post-45615048349319023702014-01-15T01:23:55.480-06:002014-01-15T01:23:55.480-06:00I'd like to challenge the citizens of Kentucky...I'd like to challenge the citizens of Kentucky. Please report any & all sightings of large cats to the proper authorities. Maybe if enough sightings are brought up, the authorities will do something about it. Hopefully before someone gets hurt or killed. Maybe if some hunter shoots & kills one, then produces the body proving that large cats roam the hills & hollers of Ky., something might be done. Again, hopefully before someone gets hurt or killed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
