Is This The Long Extinct Dire Wolf?

By Dorraine Fisher

This very strange footage was brought to my attention recently and I was asked what I thought about it.  I initially thought the footage must be faked because the “canine” in the video is simply huge. But as I watched it several times, the dire wolf is what started coming to my mind.

Dire wolves were an ancient species of wolf thought to have become extinct some 10,000 years ago. The were roughly twice the size of a modern timber wolf, stockier built, with shorter legs, probably not built for fast running. But they could have been more of an ambush predator of some of the very large prey that existed at that time, due to their large and powerfully muscular build.
In modern times in North America, there have been a few isolated claims of sightings of wolves that were much larger than the norm. Of course they could be cases mistaken identity, or maybe hybrid species’ of a wolf and a very large breed of dog, but no one can say for sure without DNA samples. But one such claim was made by renowned field cryptozoologist, JC Johnson,  on one of his many expeditions in the Four Corners region of New Mexico. This is his account of what he claimed was a possible dire wolf that he came to call the “Donkey Dog” due to its abnormally large size.

“The most striking thing I came across out here was a few years ago. I had taken a couple of friends on a two-day river trip on the San Juan River. It’s a 17-mile run through some pretty rough and wild reservation country. We took it pretty easy the first day, traveling several miles to a place I call Border Camp. We spent the night and had a leisurely breakfast and relaxed for a time for the next morning before heading out. It was early in the snow-melt runoff and the river was flowing at about 6500 c.f.s.  There is a particular phenomena on the San Juan known as ‘sand waves.” Sediments will build up on the rocks in the river, creating waves that roll back upstream, with heights of up to nine feet. We came across a long section of sand waves that as challenging as about a class II rapid. I told my friends, two of whom were in a canoe, that if we had more boats and people to rescue us, we would normally ride the waves and have some fun. But not this time, as I would be unable to perform any type of safe rescue from my kayak, or likewise, they from their canoe. We paddled hard river right. Once past the sand waves we allowed our boats to roll backwards to look back at the obstacle. We all saw the creature at the same time. It was right up at the edge of the bluff overlooking the river, and walking towards us. It had a body the size of a medium horse, canine dog legs, massive muscles, a fairly long neck, and wolfen head with long ears. We all stared in disbelief before the river sucked us downstream around the next bend. “What the hell was that?” And other exclamations followed as we worked our way through the next rapid, then got into a fairly calm section of water. I called it Donkey Dog for lack of a better description. During the rest of our journey, we would occasionally turn our boats to the side or backwards to look back river and scan the bluffs for Donkey Dog. Near an area where I usually take folks out of the water to climb up and see some pristine Anasazi ruins, we spotted Donkey Dog atop the last of the big bluffs before the surrounding area flattens out. He was nearly half a mile away and closing. Near the ruins on the other side of the river, we took our boats and hid them in the bushes. For our subject to stay in pursuit of us, he would have to cross a flat area about 200 yards long. We hoped this was a good opportunity to get a photo of it. We waited for some time, no dice. We were being eaten alive by horse flies and mosquitoes so we went back to the boats and the strong current. We were about three miles from our “take out” at this point. Still, even though the landscaped flattened out, we would look back as best we could through the heavy brush of Tammy trees and Russian Olives. There was no further sign of it. Interviews with witnesses before and after this incident, and in different locations, would lead me to believe we may have some type of cryptid wolf, perhaps left over from the last ice age. Perhaps the dire wolf.”

So, what did JC Johnson actually see on that expedition? Was it, in fact, a dire wolf? We may never know for sure. But there are sightings of abnormally large wolves in North America and it’s not unreasonable to think there may be a species we’ve overlooked. But check out this video footage and tell us what you think.

  1. Could be. I'd need the size of the dog and type to formulate a better opinion. But, Dire Wolf/Waheela/Shunka Warrekin, could be.

  2. Doesn't seem fake to me. The husky would have been pretty big like all huskies, and that wolf was about twice the size which wouldn't make sense as wolves and huskies are about the same size. It would be cool if it was an actual dire wolf. They would be awesome to study

  4. I hope so even though they are most likely dangerous because i don't like when animals go EXTINCT. Its sad and it is usually the humans fault for it happening. But not always.
