State: Ky
County: Madison
Date of Sighting: Between 1996 & 2004
Time of Day: some were daytime & some were at night.
Nearest Town: Berea
Length of Sighting: as much as 20 seconds
How many Witnesses: 1
Any Photos/Videos: no
Describe sighting in detail:

My first sighting was in 96 when I was driving north on Menelaus Rd. in Berea to visit my in-laws. I had just passed the PPG factory when I noticed a cat in the crotch of a tree on the PPG property. It was all black & about the size of a medium size dog. This was no dog. I stopped in the road & got a really good look at it. I'll never forget those piercing yellow eyes.

Another sighting I had was around the Ellipse Street/Rash Road intersection. I saw a very large black cat crossing the cut corn field about 75 yards from the road. This happened around the fall of 2003.

Another encounter I had was on Jefferson Street in Berea. It was 2001, around 3-3:30 a.m. & I was headed back to work. As I was going thru the stop light, I noticed what appeared to be a full grown bobcat coming down the hill to my right. It noticed me & did a U-turn, going back up the hill.

Another sighting occurred (August 2004) when I was going thru a spell of not sleeping very well. I would go out on our deck to listen to nature, read with a small flashlight or play with one of the Boxers we raised at the time. It was about 4 a.m. & I noticed something between my house & our neighbor's house. There right before me was a mother mountain lion with two cubs. Freaked me out. These were all tan in color except for the tuft of darker brown at the end of their tails. I watched them go out of sight due to the fact there was enough light from the street light on the other end of the property.

I remember the closest sighting to date. It was Thanksgiving about the first or second year we lived at Peachtree Drive here in Berea. After dinner, I was too full to take the garbage out like I should have, so I set it on the deck. The deck is 12 feet off the ground but it has steps to the ground. At the same time, we had this bat-crap crazy bird dog named COCO. She was a lunatic, plain & simple. Anyway, that night, she was barking like she never had before. I looked out & noticed she was looking toward the deck. I got up & grabbed my .45 to go see what was going on. I looked out onto the deck & lo & behold there's a large bobcat in the garbage having a good time in our scraps. I watched it for a few & went back to bed. heck on it, right? These sightings at Peachtree Drive here in Berea KY.
Thank you for your interest.

  1. I'd like to challenge the citizens of Kentucky. Please report any & all sightings of large cats to the proper authorities. Maybe if enough sightings are brought up, the authorities will do something about it. Hopefully before someone gets hurt or killed. Maybe if some hunter shoots & kills one, then produces the body proving that large cats roam the hills & hollers of Ky., something might be done. Again, hopefully before someone gets hurt or killed.

    1. Aren't these big cats protected under some federal law? Do they even have a hunting season in states where they're not supposed to be? What about the one posting the guy had about seeing a mother mountain lion with two cubs? There says there's a breeding population somewhere. Large cat sightings seem to pop up in areas where they're supposed to have been eliminated by hunting but how do the authorities know for certain? I think the authorities are blowing smoke up people's backsides so they don't have to get off their lazy butts & do some real work. They need to enact some kind of law that says it's ok to kill one of these cats if they are in or near populated areas or if the cat is diseased or acting aggressively. Somebody needs to be aware that this isn't just a one time thing.

    3. How recently? Is there a news article pertaining to this? It scares me that these sightings are happening & it seems like not much is being done about it. I just hope nobody gets hurt.

  2. My house is about a mile from the Kentucky border in the hills of SE Ohio. It's a very wild area close to a large national forest (Wayne National). I was clearing brush on my hill when I found a large black cat that appeared to be bigger than a normal house cat. I was thinking OK this is likely a cat with Maine Coon genes. Then I saw it's mother. That cat was about 20" tall or more with a very long tail. I only got a glimpse of it for a few seconds but I know what I saw. The smaller cat actually followed me home and eagerly ate up some of the food I give to my own cats. It seemed as content as possible to be there. A couple of hours later I heard what could only be described as a call from a cat much larger than any house cat. It sounded more like a bobcat. There are bobcats where I live. A neighbor trapped one on the same hill where I was clearing brush. I don't own the entire hill. The smaller cat answered with a large cat type squall of it's own and took off running back to be with what was obviously it's mother. I never saw either again. I see lots of wildlife at my house. It's totally in the woods and bears are a common sight there. Black bears of course. But I've never seen a cat like that before. I have heard what others told me was the call of a mountain lion but that was from a quarter of a mile away. I've seen very large tracks too big for a bobcat. But the black cat I saw wasn't even really big enough to be a bobcat. They're bigger than most people think. I've seen those too. The black cat was very thin and long. The tail was especially long. It was at almost as long as the body. I'd estimate the tail to be about 20" long also. I have no idea what kind of cat it was. But it isn't the first animal I saw that I couldn't identify and I grew up in the woods of eastern Kentucky. I saw a blue racer at my house in Ohio. They are only supposed to exist in western Ohio but I know what I saw. We do have black racers in eastern Ohio but according to the experts there are no blue racers there. I know better. There's no mistaking the steel blue of a blue racer. I also saw a snake in Kentucky that was a vivid color of blue. It was marked like a ribbon snake but they aren't supposed to be in that part of Kentucky and they aren't that color. But what was really astonishing about that snake was it's speed. I was a boy of about 13 when I saw it. It ran so fast through our garden that it completely out ran me. I lost it after about 20 seconds. It was amazingly fast. I was no slow kid and I didn't have a chance of keeping up with that snake. I actually thought that was a blue racer until I learned later what a racer looked like. I was a kid and didn't know snakes at the time. I still don't know what kind of snake that was. I've never seen it in any book on Kentucky wildlife or any other book on wildlife for that matter. The old folks always talked about blue racers when I was young. It could be they all thought that snake was a blue racer because they described a snake like it when they talked about a blue racer. It was a very rural area and there weren't a lot of animal experts. But my grandmother was a college graduate in horticulture. She knew every plant in the area and every animal too I would have thought but no one I have seen has ever exactly described a snake like that one. I've only heard similar descriptions of what they called a blue racer.

  3. So keep looking for what's out there. It isn't all written down in books. Take it from an old hillbilly. I know what I've seen. I know what others have told me. My brother described a cat very similar to the one I saw. His dogs ran one up a tree when he was coon hunting one night. The cat jumped out of the tree and was about to kill two large hounds before my brother kicked it off of them. It ran after that. Those cats are out there. The place he saw that cat was about 4 miles from my house across the river in Kentucky.

  6. If you come across knots and mats, try to pick at them gradually with a small comb (with some longhaired breeds it may be necessary to perform this step first).discover here
